about AI.\n\nLLMs, AI Agents, RAG, MCP, prompt engineering...there's something new every week.\n\nLike many of you, I've been spending time learning these technologies, experimenting with different tools, and trying to understand where everything is heading.\n\nBut while learning AI, one question kept coming back to me.\n\nWhre does AI actually fit within Enterprise Architecture?\n\nMost conversations start with the model.\n\nI think they should start with the enterprise.\n\n**Looking Back**\n\nOver the last two decades, I've worked through several technology shifts.\n\nPhysical infrastructure → Virtualization\n\nVirtualization → Cloud\n\nCloud → Platform Engineering\n\nAutomation → Everything\n\nEvery transition introduced new tools, new platforms, and new buzzwords.\n\nBut something interesting never changed.\n\nSuccessful enterprise systems still depended on the same fundamentals:\n\nBusiness goals\n\nEnterprise Architecture\n\nReliable platforms\n\nSecurity\n\nData\n\nGovernance\n\nOperations\n\nTechnology changed.\n\nEngineering principles didn't.\n\nThat's one of the reasons I don't see AI as something completely separate.\n\nAI Is Just Another Enterprise Capability\n\nToday, AI is often treated like its own universe.\n\nDedicated AI teams.\n\nAI platforms.\n\nAI roadmaps.\n\nAI strategies.\n\nThat all makes sense.\n\nBut I think there's a risk if we start treating AI as something that sits outside Enterprise Architecture.\n\nAI doesn't work in isolation.\n\nIt needs good data.\n\nIt needs infrastructure.\n\nIt needs platforms.\n\nIt needs security.\n\nIt needs governance.\n\nIt needs integration with business applications.\n\nAnd, most importantly, it needs to solve a real business problem.\n\nFrom an architect's point of view, AI isn't an island.\n\nIt's another enterprise capability.\n\nJust like databases, APIs, messaging platforms, Kubernetes, and cloud services became part of our enterprise landscape, AI is becoming another capability that needs to be architected—not bolted on.\n\n**The Enterprise Architect in Me**\n\nOne thing I've always liked about Enterprise Architecture is that we rarely start with technology.\n\nWe usually ask questions like:\n\nWhat business problem are we solving?\n\nWhich capability are we improving?\n\nWhat data do we need?\n\nHow will this integrate with existing systems?\n\nHow do we operate and govern it?\n\nOnly then do we choose the technology.\n\nPersonally, I think AI deserves the same treatment.\n\nInstead of asking:\n\n\"How do we implement AI?\"\n\nmaybe we should ask:\n\n\"Which business capabilities can benefit from intelligence, and how should we architect that?\"\n\nIt's a small change in thinking, but I believe it leads to much better solutions.\n\nIt's About More Than Models\n\nRight now, everyone is comparing models.\n\nWho's faster?\n\nWho's smarter?\n\nWho's cheaper?\n\nThose are interesting discussions.\n\nBut in the enterprise, success usually comes down to questions like:\n\nCan we trust the data?\n\nIs it secure?\n\nCan we scale it?\n\nCan we operate it?\n\nCan we govern it?\n\nDoes it actually create business value?\n\nThose aren't AI questions.\n\nThey're engineering questions.\n\nAnd we've been dealing with them for years.\n\nWhy I Started HELIX\n\nOver the last few months, I've been documenting my learning and trying to connect the dots between Enterprise Architecture, Platform Engineering, and AI.\n\nThat became HELIX.\n\nIt's simply my engineering journal.\n\nA place where I share ideas, architectural viewpoints, experiments, and lessons as I continue learning.\n\nSome posts will be architecture-focused.\n\nSome will be hands-on.\n\nSome may simply be questions I'm still trying to answer.\n\nAnd that's okay.\n\nTechnology evolves, and so should our thinking.\n\nLet's Discuss\n\nThis is just one perspective.\n\nI'm genuinely interested in hearing how others see it.\n\nDo you
