xAI's AI agent can now spend real money on your behalf, one approved transaction at a time
Your AI assistant just got a wallet. Grok Bot, the AI agent built by xAI, can now be linked to a Stripe Link account to make online purchases for users in the US. Every transaction requires explicit human approval before any money moves, but the core capability is new and significant: an AI agent that can browse, select, and buy things on the internet with your payment credentials attached.
The integration, announced on August 28, 2026, builds on Stripe’s “wallet for agents” infrastructure that the payments giant rolled out back in April 2026. That infrastructure was designed specifically for this moment, when AI agents would need a way to transact without directly handling sensitive financial information.
How it actually works #
Grok Bot generates single-use virtual cards or payment tokens for each approved transaction. Think of it like a disposable credit card number that exists for exactly one purchase and then evaporates.
The design is deliberately cautious. Grok Bot never sees your stored payment methods, passwords, or two-factor authentication details. It operates in a dedicated cloud environment built for multi-step task execution, walled off from the kind of sensitive data that would make a security breach catastrophic.
Every single charge requires the user to say yes. There is no “set it and forget it” mode where Grok Bot autonomously drains your checking account on office supplies it thinks you need.
The feature launched roughly two and a half weeks after Grok Bot’s beta debuted on August 11, 2026. That beta already showcased capabilities beyond standard chatbot fare, handling research tasks and multi-step automation.
The cost of convenience #
Access to Grok Bot’s full suite of capabilities, including the new payment features, comes with a subscription fee of $200 per month or higher. That price point positions it firmly in the “power user and business” category rather than something the average consumer would pick up for casual shopping.
Early user discussions have reflected a split between genuine excitement about the potential for automated business spending, paired with understandable caution about letting an AI make financial decisions.
