Recycling intelligence platform Greyparrot.ai Ltd. today announced it raised $27 million in Series B funding led by Om Elite Assets Investment to scale its infrastructure globally.

Today’s recycling process is largely manual and mechanical; it depends heavily on separators acting correctly on streams of waste and this is challenging largely because it’s difficult to fully untangle what’s in a basket of recycling. Many of today’s recycling processes were built decades ago to handle simpler packaging, but modern marketing and consumption have made products far more complex than ever.

The use of large-scale machine vision and physical AI processes to augment existing separator technology means that less gets missed and tossed into the landfill. Cameras with computer intelligence behind them mean that recycling facilities can measure every object passing through and get a more accurate idea of how to manage them.

“Waste is like the shadow of human consumption every day,” co-founder of Greyparrot Ambarish Mitra told SiliconANGLE in an interview.

He described this as almost a reflection of an economic process, which is what informed Greyparrot’s approach to augmenting recycling. The company did not approach the problem from an environmental angle; instead, the vision is economic: “It was almost like unlocking the financial value of waste.”

Recovering aluminum, polyethylene terephthalate, and high-Density polyethylene can create revenue for a recycling facility. Processing them into clean, high-quality raw materials allows their resale to manufacturers. Whereas tossing the same into a landfill represents lost value that could have been recovered.

The economic impact is real for the recycling facility, while the ecological benefit of less trash headed to the environment becomes a very real outcome.

Turning waste into value with intelligence

The company’s flagship product, Greyparrot Analyzer, uses AI-enabled cameras that sit above conveyor belts in sorting facilities to deliver real-time product-level visibility into waste streams. It can identify over 111 different types of waste. According to the company, the system has recorded over 1 trillion detections to date. If every detection was recycled at the highest purity and sold, these detections represent a potential $2.5 billion in recovered material value.

With AI monitoring incoming streams of recyclable waste, fewer “good” recyclables get discarded, allowing plants to optimize their aging systems. This allows workers to spend less time reacting to problems when the accuracy ratio tilts towards tossing too much out or something gets sorted into recycling that cannot and allows them to spend more time optimizing. Plant owners can benefit from higher yields without purchasing whole new equipment.

The company said its identification and recovery system delivers up to 40 times the return on investment for recycling centers.

Mitra described the problem facing today’s recycling facilities as a technology gap. Materials science leads to assumptions that identical products would behave identically during recycling; however, marketing tendencies and packaging designs can lead to different results. For example, subtle design factors, such as color, can lead to dramatically different recovery rates – lightly colored aerosol cans are recovered more frequently than dark colors, despite being identical materials.

“We want to inform packaging design policy,” Mitra said. The data recovered by observing millions of products flowing through recycled waste has put Greyparrot in the position of informing regulators and industry leaders better about how packaging could be developed to make it easier to identify and recapture. “This way the burden doesn’t fall on recycling plants.”

If manufacturers understand which designs move successfully through existing infrastructure, they can make changes that improve recovery rates. Even small changes could have a dramatic impact without requiring new recycling infrastructure. Mitra said new funding will primarily support expansion within the United States, where the company sees the greatest concentration of waste generation. Greyparrot also plans continued hardware development, hiring and broader efforts to use recycling data to inform public policy.
