The Privacy Problem That Won't Go Away #
Granola markets itself on privacy, but independent reporting this year found two issues: notes generate public-facing links by default, and non-enterprise users are opted into AI model training unless they manually navigate settings to opt out. AI note-takers are going through the same arc as every enterprise SaaS tool before them: start with user delight, then bolt on admin surveillance because that's what procurement departments pay for. Granola is attempting the reverse — build for the user and refuse the admin upsell.
Investors will want to know whether that's a moat or a ceiling. If enterprise buyers won't purchase without surveillance features, Granola is capping its TAM. If individual users choose Granola specifically because it refuses surveillance, the brand becomes the product.
