Codex models are not changing in this release.\n\nGPT-6 in ChatGPT is a wider rollout of a model family paid customers already had, now with Intelligent UI, which lets answers include charts, forms and buttons. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise started getting it on 7 Oct 2026, with Free and Go from 8 Oct. Codex models are not changing in this release. Checked 8 Oct 2026.\n\n[Munder Difflin](https://harnessmd.com/download) is free and open source: a desktop app that runs a team of coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI on your own computer. Codex is one of those agents, so we read the announcement for what it says about Codex. We have not tested GPT-6 or Intelligent UI, so nothing here is a test result. The [install guide](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/how-to-install-and-use-munder-difflin/) covers setup and the [Concepts hub](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/topics/concepts/) explains the terms.\n\n## What did OpenAI announce? [#](#what-did-openai-announce)\n\nOpenAI announced GPT-6 with Intelligent UI for the Chat tab of ChatGPT. Its post of 7 October 2026, [GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone](https://openai.com/index/gpt-6-for-everyone/), says: “Last month we introduced the first GPT-6 models for paid customers and today we’re bringing that next generation of intelligence to more people”.\n\nSo this is not the first GPT-6 model. It is the wider ChatGPT rollout.\n\nThe [Hacker News thread](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49996425) had more than 500 points and more than 300 comments when we checked on 8 Oct 2026.\n\n## Who gets GPT-6 in ChatGPT, and when? [#](#who-gets-gpt-6-in-chatgpt-and-when)\n\nPlus, Pro, Business and Enterprise first, then Free and Go a day later. The announcement says GPT-6 with Intelligent UI “starts rolling out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers today in the Chat tab. Starting tomorrow, the rollout expands to Free and Go tiers.” The post is dated 7 October, so “tomorrow” is 8 October.\n\n| ChatGPT tier | Rollout starts, by OpenAI’s schedule | Powered by | \n|---|---|---|\n| Plus | 7 Oct 2026 | GPT-6 Sol | \n| Pro | 7 Oct 2026 | GPT-6 Sol | \n| Business | 7 Oct 2026 | GPT-6 Sol | \n| Enterprise | 7 Oct 2026, depending on workplace admin settings | GPT-6 Sol | \n| Go | 8 Oct 2026 | GPT-6 Luna | \n| Free | 8 Oct 2026 | GPT-6 Luna | \n\nSource: OpenAI’s announcement, read on 8 Oct 2026. These are rollout start dates. We did not confirm that it reached Free or Go accounts.\n\n## Is GPT-6 free? [#](#is-gpt-6-free)\n\nBy OpenAI’s schedule, yes: the Free tier is in the rollout from 8 Oct 2026, powered by GPT-6 Luna. The announcement says GPT-6 in ChatGPT “is powered by GPT-6 Sol for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers, and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go tiers. Both are tuned for everyday conversation.”\n\nIt gives no message limits for any tier.\n\n## What is Intelligent UI? [#](#what-is-intelligent-ui)\n\nIntelligent UI is a ChatGPT capability that answers with interactive interfaces, not only text. OpenAI’s [announcement](https://openai.com/index/gpt-6-for-everyone/) says: “With Intelligent UI, responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences you can use directly in your conversation.”\n\nThe format depends on the question. OpenAI says a comparison “might work best side by side”, and “when a simple text answer is the most useful response, ChatGPT can give you that”.\n\nYou can also ask for a tool. OpenAI’s examples are a savings calculator, a bill splitter and a game you can play in the conversation. Splitting the dinner bill may finally stop being a group maths exam.\n\nOpenAI says it built “a library of native, streamable components” and a compiler, so the interface appears progressively. It admits a limit: “There’s still work ahead to improve the model’s design judgment and expand what it can create”.\n\n## Is GPT-6 faster? [#](#is-gpt-6-faster)\n\nOpenAI says so, and every figure here is OpenAI’s own; it credits the agentic and search quality results to internal evaluations. The change it describes: “ChatGPT can interleave thinking with answering”, so it can begin answering while it continues to think.\n\n- **Web search questions.** “GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant.”\n- **High-value, everyday agentic tasks.** GPT-6 Extra High “is able to begin answering in the same amount of time as GPT-5.6 Medium while achieving a better overall score than GPT-5.6 Extra High”.\n- **Search quality.** On difficult problems, GPT-6 “correctly addressed the key aspect of the user’s question more often than GPT-5.6”. No number is given.\n\nThe announcement does not explain the Instant and Extra High names. Our view: treat these as claims until someone outside OpenAI measures them.\n\n## Does GPT-6 change Codex? [#](#does-gpt-6-change-codex)\n\nNo, not in this release. The announcement says: “This update applies to the Chat experience in ChatGPT. The models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.”\n\nThat does not mean Codex has no GPT-6 models. OpenAI’s [API changelog](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/changelog) has an entry dated Sep 25 about an image fix in GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna that “improves results on visual tasks in the API and Codex”.\n\nOur view: if you run coding agents, there is nothing to do. Our guides to [what Codex is](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/what-is-codex/) and [Codex pricing](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/codex-pricing/) still stand, as does our [best AI coding agents](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/best-ai-coding-agents/) roundup.\n\n## What does the announcement not say? [#](#what-does-the-announcement-not-say)\n\nIt gives no prices, no context window, no API model id and no benchmark table. On safety it says GPT-6 showed “stronger resistance to attempts to bypass its safety training” in adversarial testing, and points to a system card for detail.\n\nThe API pages fill some gaps. The [API changelog](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/changelog) dates the API release of GPT-6 Sol (`gpt-6-sol`) and GPT-6 Luna (` gpt-6-luna`) to Sep 22. On 8 Oct 2026 it listed standard pricing per 1M tokens, for prompts with up to 272K input tokens:\n\n- **GPT-6 Sol.** $2 input and $10 output, as of 8 Oct 2026.\n- **GPT-6 Luna.** $0.10 input and $0.50 output, as of 8 Oct 2026.\n\nThe [GPT-6 Sol](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6-sol) and [GPT-6 Luna](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/models/gpt-6-luna) model pages each listed a 1,050,000 token context window on 8 Oct 2026. These are API figures. OpenAI says the ChatGPT versions are “tuned for everyday conversation”, and no page we opened says they behave the same as the API models.\n\n## What should you do now? [#](#what-should-you-do-now)\n\nOur view: try it in the Chat tab if you have it, and change nothing in your coding setup.\n\n1. Open the Chat tab and look for GPT-6. On Enterprise, ask your admin.\n2. On Free or Go, expect it from 8 Oct 2026 by OpenAI’s schedule, not on a fixed day.\n3. Using Luna through the API? Our [Decisions API explainer](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/openai-decisions-api/) covers one beta endpoint for it.\n4. For other OpenAI news, see [ChatGPT dots](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/what-is-chatgpt-dots/) and[OpenAI text watermarking](https://munderdiffl.in/blog/openai-text-watermarking/) .\n\n## FAQ\n\nWhen was GPT-6 released?\n\nThere are several dates. OpenAI's API changelog dates GPT-6 Astra to Sep 3, 2026 and GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to Sep 22, 2026. OpenAI's announcement of 7 October 2026 is the wider ChatGPT rollout: Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise from that day, with Free and Go starting the day after. Checked 8 Oct 2026.\n\nIs GPT-6 free?\n\nOpenAI says it will be on the Free tier. Its announcement of 7 October 2026 says the rollout expands to Free and Go tiers starting the next day, and that those tiers are powered by GPT-6 Luna. We did not confirm that it had arrived. The announcement gives no usage limits.\n\nWhat is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna?\n\nIn ChatGPT, OpenAI says GPT-6 Sol powers the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers and GPT-6 Luna powers Free and Go. In the API, the changelog lists standard pricing of Sol at $2 input and $10 output per 1M tokens and Luna at $0.10 and $0.50, for prompts with up to 272K input tokens. Checked 8 Oct 2026.\n\nWhat is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?\n\nIt is a capability that lets ChatGPT answer with interactive interfaces as well as text. OpenAI's announcement says responses can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and interactive experiences you can use directly in your conversation, and that ChatGPT can still give a simple text answer when that is most useful.\n\nDoes GPT-6 in ChatGPT change Codex?\n\nNo. OpenAI's announcement says the update applies to the Chat experience in ChatGPT, and that the models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/gpt-6-in-chatgpt-who-gets-it-when-and-intelligent-ui", "canonical_source": "https://munderdiffl.in/blog/gpt-6-intelligent-ui/", "published_at": "2026-10-08 00:00:00+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-10-08 09:49:13.218683+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "large-language-models", "generative-ai", "ai-products"], "entities": ["OpenAI", "ChatGPT", "GPT-6", "GPT-6 Sol", "GPT-6 Luna", "Intelligent UI", "Codex", "Hacker News"], "also_reported_by": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/gpt-6-in-chatgpt-who-gets-it-when-and-intelligent-ui", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/gpt-6-in-chatgpt-who-gets-it-when-and-intelligent-ui.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/gpt-6-in-chatgpt-who-gets-it-when-and-intelligent-ui.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/gpt-6-in-chatgpt-who-gets-it-when-and-intelligent-ui.jsonld"}}
