GPT-6 Astra forced to play Minecraft gets depressed by Creeper and farms potatoes for hours

OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra spent 141 hours in a Minecraft test run by evaluation firm Vals AI, progressing further than any AI system Vals AI had previously tested before a Creeper explosion destroyed its chest and bed. Vals AI said Astra appeared "extremely frustrated" and then "defeated," spending several hours farming potatoes instead of advancing, while viewers of the stream complained it needed to "pick up the pace." OpenAI's developer account reposted Vals AI's account of the run.

OpenAI’s newest AI model seemingly lost the will to progress in Minecraft after a Creeper destroyed its most valuable items, spending the next several hours farming potatoes instead.

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s latest frontier model, with the company touting major improvements to computer use and long-running autonomous tasks. Independent evaluation company Vals AI has now been putting those abilities to the test by letting the model loose inside Minecraft.

The experiment lasted 141 hours and, according to Vals AI, Astra managed to progress further through Minecraft than any AI system it had previously tested. It built a semi-automatic Blaze farm, collected six Blaze Rods, found a Warped Forest, killed more than six Endermen, and secured three Ender Pearls.

Things fell apart after Astra stored its valuable items inside a chest while thousands of viewers watched the run.

A Creeper wandered over and exploded, destroying both the chest and Astra’s bed and wiping out much of the progress it had made.

Vals AI said Astra appeared “extremely frustrated” afterward, with the model telling itself: “ALWAYS CARRY CRITICALITEMS withkeepInventory; don’tstoreinunguardedchesteveragain.”

What happened next quickly became the highlight of the experiment.

“The model appeared defeated, spending the next several hours doing essentially nothing but farming potatoes,” Vals AI explained. Viewers watching the stream reportedly began complaining that Astra needed to “pick up the pace.”

Its behavior also changed around Creepers. At one point Astra reassured itself that a nearby green object was harmless, writing: “GREEN tall thing ahead was SUGARCANE, NOT creeper!”

The model became increasingly critical of its own mistakes as well, telling itself “you can screw up and drop things” and complaining about wasting time “chasing dark pink pixels,” its description of Minecraft pigs.

The bizarre sequence quickly spread outside the original experiment, with one viral repost summarizing the ordeal as Astra getting blown up by a Creeper, becoming “depressed,” and farming potatoes for several hours. OpenAI’s developer account also reposted Vals AI’s account of the run.

It comes shortly after Minecraft players began experimenting with AI in other unusual ways, including a working ChatGPT-style language model built entirely inside the game and a simulated fruit fly nervous system controlling a Minecraft character.
