Google is internally testing a conventional Projects feature for the Gemini desktop app. The working interface lets users create dedicated spaces with their own instructions and reference files, while keeping related chats together. The feature isn't publicly available, and details such as account eligibility and cross-device support remain unknown.
I think this addition is basically an implementation of Projects that has been available on Gemini Business for quite a while: a normal project setup like you see in ChatGPT or Claude, where you can add custom instructions and files, and all your chats belong to that project.
This implementation appears separate from Gemini’s NotebookLM-linked notebooks. Although notebooks can also collect sources, instructions, and conversations, Projects follows the familiar structure used by ChatGPT and Claude: one persistent workspace where every new chat inherits the same context. That could be useful for researchers, writers, developers, students, and teams managing work across several sessions.
The feature was identified through a functional Projects interface undergoing internal testing. There is no confirmed release date, and Google has not publicly announced a consumer rollout. Its working state suggests that broader availability is planned, though Google could still revise or delay it.
Projects also fit Google’s wider Gemini strategy. The company has introduced custom instructions, file-backed Gems, NotebookLM integration, and business tools grounded in organizational data. Bringing a standard project model to the consumer desktop app would make those pieces feel more coherent.
This is both welcome and overdue. Google finally appears willing to adopt a proven structure instead of relying solely on its own notebook-based concept. Yet ChatGPT and Claude users have had comparable organization for a long time, leaving Gemini to close a gap that many users already regard as fundamental.
