# Google surpasses Apple to become second largest company globally

Alphabet's AI-fueled rally has flipped a market cap hierarchy that stood largely unchallenged since 2019, with Nvidia sitting comfortably at the top.

Alphabet just did something it hasn’t managed since 2019: it passed Apple in market capitalization. The parent company of Google closed at $3.88 trillion on January 7, edging out Apple’s $3.84 trillion and claiming the title of second-largest public company on the planet, behind only Nvidia.

Alphabet shares climbed over 2% that day, closing at $322.03.

## The AI gap is doing the heavy lifting

Alphabet’s stock gained 65% throughout 2025, its strongest annual performance since 2009. The gains were driven by a cascade of AI-related developments. Alphabet rolled out custom chips called Ironwood TPU, launched AI models branded as Gemini 3, and inked cloud collaborations that made enterprise clients take the company’s AI ambitions seriously.

Meanwhile, Apple was headed in the opposite direction. Analysts have downgraded the company over delays in its next-generation Siri features, which were expected to arrive sometime in 2026.

By early August 2026, Alphabet had extended its lead, carrying a market cap of approximately $4.59 trillion compared to Apple’s $4.515 trillion.

## The competitive landscape is getting uncomfortable for Apple

Apple has traditionally prioritized privacy and on-device processing, which creates real constraints when competing against cloud-first AI approaches. Google has been building large language models and custom silicon for years. Google has both the data center infrastructure and cloud-scale compute. Apple is still figuring out its approach.

Nvidia, as the supplier of the GPUs that power most AI training workloads globally, benefits regardless of whether Google or Apple wins the application layer. The chip company’s position at the top of the market cap rankings, with a valuation well above $4 trillion, reflects its role as the dominant infrastructure provider across AI workloads.
