- Google Sheets can now preserve formatting and structural information while importing Excel files.
- Sheets now imports Excel worksheets as “Sheets tables.”
- It also keeps pivot tables intact, rather than converting them into static grids.
Google has been steadily adding new features and improvements to Sheets, most recently offering Gemini integration and the ability to import 3D graphs from Excel sheets. Now, the web app is gaining even more improvements aimed at users importing Excel files into Google Sheets.
Google announced in a blog post that Sheets is gaining two key improvements. First, when users import an Excel file into Sheets, its tables will be added as Sheets tables. This ensures that structural and formatting information remains intact and that Excel tables stay properly formatted when opened in Google Sheets.
The web app now also supports importing pivot tables from Excel. Previously, importing an Excel file with pivot tables into Sheets resulted in those tables being converted into static tables. Now, however, Sheets will keep pivot tables intact, allowing users to easily manipulate data in their worksheets and have the updated data reflected in the pivot tables.
Both features are rolling out to Sheets users automatically, and there’s no need to manually enable anything. Importing Excel tables as Sheets tables is available right now to all users with Google Workspace or personal accounts. The ability to import pivot tables is rolling out as well and could take up to 15 days to reach everyone.
