- Alphabet said the Gemini app reached 950 million monthly active users, compared with more than 750 million in February and more than 450 million a year earlier. [1][2][3] - The company said Gemini’s daily active audience tripled over the past year; it did not say monthly active users tripled. [1] - ChatGPT’s billion-user milestone is a Sensor Tower estimate for its mobile app, while Meta’s billion-user figure covers Meta AI across its apps. [5][7] - Gemini’s consumer audience is separate from Alphabet’s enterprise metrics, including more than eight million paid Gemini Enterprise seats reported in February.
[1][10] Google’s Gemini app has reached 950 million monthly active users, putting the AI assistant within 50 million of the billion-user threshold. Alphabet disclosed the figure during its second-quarter earnings call on July 22.[1]
The latest count compares with more than 750 million users reported in February and more than 450 million in July 2025. Because both earlier disclosures were lower bounds rather than exact totals, the figures establish that Gemini’s monthly audience roughly doubled over the year, but do not support a precise growth rate.[2][3]
Alphabet also said Gemini’s daily active users tripled over the past year. That distinction matters: the company did not say its monthly audience tripled. It did not disclose the absolute number of daily users or the ratio of daily to monthly users.[1]
What Google’s 950 million figure measures #
Alphabet consistently labels the metric as monthly active users of the “Gemini app.” Google describes the app as encompassing its mobile and web experiences.[4]
Alphabet reports that audience separately from AI Mode and AI Overviews in Google Search. AI Mode has passed one billion monthly active users, but the company has not disclosed how much its audience overlaps with Gemini’s. Adding the product totals would therefore risk counting the same people more than once.[1]
The Q2 earnings release and Pichai’s prepared remarks do not specify what action qualifies someone as an active Gemini user, whether the measurement period is 28 or 30 days, or how users are deduplicated across accounts and devices. They also do not divide the audience into free and paid users. The 950 million figure is therefore best read as Alphabet’s internal measure of consumer reach, not a standardized statistic that can be compared directly with every rival disclosure.
ChatGPT, Meta AI, Copilot and Claude use different yardsticks #
Sensor Tower estimated that ChatGPT’s mobile app passed one billion monthly active users in May 2026, making it the fastest mobile app to reach that level. That figure comes from an outside analytics provider rather than an equivalent OpenAI disclosure, and its stated scope is mobile-app activity.[5]
OpenAI’s own public adoption research uses a weekly-active definition: users are considered active if they sent a message during the preceding seven days. In the materials reviewed for this article, OpenAI did not publish a directly comparable monthly total using the same scope and methodology as Alphabet’s Gemini figure.[6]
Meta said in May 2025 that Meta AI had one billion monthly active users across its apps. That was not a count confined to Meta’s standalone AI app, making it structurally different from a dedicated-assistant figure.[7]
Microsoft said in October 2025 that its first-party Copilot family had more than 150 million monthly active users across consumer and commercial products. That grouping spans assistants for workplace tasks, coding, security, health and consumer use rather than one consumer chatbot.[8]
Anthropic has not disclosed Claude’s total consumer audience. In March, the company told TechCrunch that paid Claude subscriptions had more than doubled during 2026, but that does not include free users and is not an active-user count.[9]
Consumer reach is not enterprise adoption #
Gemini’s 950 million monthly users should be kept separate from Alphabet’s business adoption claims. The company said nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise, more than nine million developers build with its models each month, and its first-party model APIs process about 22 billion tokens per minute, up from 16 billion in the previous quarter.[1]
Those figures measure organizations, developers and computing activity, not individual consumers. Alphabet also does not define the level of testing, deployment or employee usage required for a Fortune 100 company to count as using Gemini Enterprise.
Alphabet provided a firmer commercial benchmark in February, when it said it had sold more than eight million paid Gemini Enterprise seats to more than 2,800 companies. The latest earnings materials did not update that seat count.[10]
Rival enterprise figures also differ in scope and timing. Microsoft reported more than 20 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats in April, while OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report cited more than seven million ChatGPT workplace seats. These seat totals are more closely tied to commercial adoption than consumer MAUs, but they still do not establish how frequently licensed workers use the products.[11][12]
