Google Rewrote giflib in Rust With AI — Caught a Zero-Day

Google rewrote the giflib library in Rust using its Gemini AI and deployed the result to production, leaving its systems already immune when CVE-2026-26740 dropped, according to byteiota. The rewrite was carried out with Gemini AI as the code-generation tool, and the resulting Rust implementation was in production before the vulnerability was disclosed.
