Google is working on a feature that would let its Gemini desktop application access Apple Messages, a development that could reshape how AI assistants interact with one of the most widely used messaging platforms on the planet.
If shipped, the feature would put Gemini in direct competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which beat Google to the punch by adding Apple Messages integration to its own macOS app back on August 20, 2026. That plugin lets ChatGPT users read, search, draft, and send messages through Apple’s messaging infrastructure, covering iMessage, SMS, and RCS.
The desktop AI race is heating up #
Google launched its native Gemini desktop app for macOS on April 15, 2026, requiring macOS 15 or later. The Windows version followed on September 10, 2026. Both apps have centered on productivity features: keyboard shortcuts, contextual screen sharing, and the kind of workflow tools that make sense for a Google product trying to embed itself into your workday.
What they haven’t included, at least not yet, is any integration with Apple’s messaging services.
Google and Apple: partners and rivals simultaneously #
On January 12, 2026, the two companies announced a partnership to integrate Google’s Gemini models into next-generation Siri functionalities. Apple essentially acknowledged that its own AI capabilities needed outside help, and Google was happy to provide the engine.

But that collaboration has clear boundaries. The Siri integration involves Gemini’s language models powering Apple’s assistant on Apple devices. It does not extend to giving Google’s own apps direct access to Apple’s messaging ecosystem on desktop.
For Gemini to access Apple Messages on macOS, Google would likely need to work within the same permission frameworks that OpenAI navigated for ChatGPT. Apple’s macOS does allow third-party apps to request access to Messages data through system permissions, but the user has to explicitly grant it. On the Android side, Gemini already has some messaging capabilities through Google Messages, letting users draft and manage texts with AI assistance. But cross-platform access to Apple Messages has remained absent, creating an asymmetry that limits Gemini’s usefulness for anyone living in Apple’s ecosystem while using Google’s AI tools.
Why this matters for the AI assistant landscape #
OpenAI’s early move into Apple Messages integration gave ChatGPT a meaningful advantage in this race. Users who want their AI assistant to handle communications, not just answer trivia, have had exactly one option on macOS. If Google ships this feature, that changes.
