Google and Unity [announced](https://unity.com/blog/everyone-plays-now-everyone-can-create) a strategic partnership to build a new, integrated gaming platform coming later this year designed to revolutionize the next era of gaming.

They will combine Google Playground’s no-code game generation with Unity’s Unity Spark pro 3D tech platform to build a new kind of generation tool for creators. The tools are enabled by generative AI.

Bringing together the power of Google AI, the reach of Google’s billion user products, and the world-class game-building expertise of Unity, this initiative will put game creation in the hands of millions of new creators, and bring new experiences to billions of players worldwide.

“Today, together with our partners at Google, we announced Unity Spark – a new way for people to come together to make and share games right in their browser, no prior Unity or game development experience required,” said Matt Bromberg, CEO of Unity, in a [blog post](https://unity.com/blog/why-we-built-unity-spark). “This isn’t about “one-shotting”. Asking AI to regurgitate an already invented game does not make you the next Hideo Kojima, any more than re-typing the first paragraph of War and Peace in your word processor makes you Tolstoy.”

He added, “Unity Spark is about being able to create real, unique interactive experiences. To build something worth working on, polishing, and sharing. It’s about using the new technology to enable more people to express themselves. And it all begins with the game art. Unity Spark connects directly to the Unity Asset Store, so you can build with thousands of high-quality, artist-created assets made by our community.”

## Exploring the next frontier of interactive media

Google and Unity share a fundamental belief – that AI can open the opportunity of game creation to anyone with an idea for a game – and the two companies are teaming up to build that future together.

The partnership unites Google’s cutting-edge AI research with Unity’s industry-leading engine technology to build something new: creation tools anyone can pick up, AI designed for interactive play, and a platform that is built for community driven features. To empower creativity for everyone, Google is deeply committed to working alongside Unity, uniting cutting-edge AI research with industry-leading engine technology.

## Introducing Playground, a gaming platform for creators of all abilities

An essential part of this partnership is Google’s experimental new Playground platform,

available today, which allows users (18+) to generate and customize playable games using

natural language prompts, with no coding required.

Building on Playground, later this year Google and Unity will introduce an expanded creation

experience called Unity Spark, a brand new product built from the ground up for a new

generation of creators.

Playground with [Unity Spark](https://unity.com/spark) maintains an accessible interface while unlocking robust, professional-level mechanics, high-fidelity 3D capabilities, and the ultimate flexibility of the Unity runtime. This ensures a comprehensive ecosystem where creators can start with a simple text prompt and eventually grow into building immersive, superlative experiences with Unity as the premier partner.

Playground is avalable for anyone 18 or older in the U.S. to generate and customize a playable game from a text prompt, with no coding required. Unity Spark is a Unity product that will be an expanded creation experience that will arrive on Playground in a closed beta test later this year. When Unity Spark debuts, you will be able to access it through Playground. And anything you create with Unity Spark can be published on Playground as well.

Unity Spark is a new way for people to come together to make and share games right in their browser. So you describe the game, and you describe the game you want, and you watch it become something you can play. There’s nothing to install. There’s no engine to learn. No code to write. Unity wanted to make clear this is not about one-shooting a game. That would be a bunch of slop. Unity built Spark to go beyond the prompt and get past the first result.

“We made Unity Spark for the gamers who have spent a thousand hours inside a genre and know exactly what’s missing. The graphic artist who wants to bring their vision to life but doesn’t know how to code. Modders who now want to create something entirely new. That’s the opportunity we see: Folks with real creative conviction who can now fulfill their full potential,” Bromberg said. “Will some graduate to become professionals in our industry? Will some current professionals use Unity Spark as well to explore new ideas? We certainly hope both are true. We’ll see. One thing is certain: Trying to build a real game for yourself will only deepen the respect you have for the people who apply the art and craft of gamemaking at the highest level.”

Unity wants users to keep going, keep building, keep creating, and iterating until they feel the game is finished. Spark is powered by Unity’s engines. It runs on Unity, the same engine behind the games that millions and millions of people already play.

With Unity Spark, you will have assets from the Unity Asset Store that you can access in the same way professional studios do.

Bromberg said that making even rudimentary interactive entertainment is very hard, demanding expertise in many crafts – narrative, design, art, sound, UI, level design, front-and-back end development, systems design, scripting, just to name a few.

“Producing a polished experience of your own has long been beyond the capabilities of most people,” Bromberg said. “As a consequence, although about three billion people play a game made with Unity each month, almost none of them have ever made one. Electronic games are the last major form of entertainment that nearly everyone consumes but almost nobody creates. That’s something we’d like to help change.”

And he said, “We don’t know exactly who will walk through this door, or what they’ll make. That’s the whole point. Democratizing game creation is Unity’s founding mission. Unity Spark was incubated in that spirit. We can’t wait to see what you build together.”

## Unprecedented reach and multi-platform distribution

Built on the strength of Google’s expansive consumer ecosystem, this partnership will offer

creators a global stage. With intuitive publishing tools, creators can easily connect with a global

audience of players.

Google will be highlighting standout Playground creations across its network, celebrating a new

generation of creators, and inspiring them to explore the advanced tools available in Unity

Spark. This partnership will offer an unparalleled go-to-market boost for Playground and Unity

Spark creators.

## Built-in community connection

Recognizing that community is at the heart of gaming, the platform is deeply-integrated with

Google’s communal infrastructure. Users can log in with their Google Play Games profile to

easily access built-in leaderboards, multiplayer matchmaking, and community features — ready from day one. Playground public creations feature interactive communal elements that

encourage players to share, like, and engage with new games. These mechanics will fuel

continuous engagement and a powerful communal flywheel.

Creators can test out Playground at playground.google.com, and learn more about Unity Spark

online at [unity.com/spark](https://nity.com/spark).

## More details

The tool could be used by gamers who spend thousands of hours playing, or an artist who has a vision for a world, or an experienced modder. Spark runs in a Chrome browser. It gives you a chat window and a 3D view. You can say, “Let’s create a nice sunrise.”

It will do so. Then you can add onto the scene as you wish. You can opt for a 2D scene or a 3D scene. And you can also customize the editor to your needs. Someone else can join the session via a shared URL and there is no need to create a versioning system so each person’s changes are stored. To publish your Unity Spark game, you just click publish at the top. You get a URL and then you can share it with others.

Spark will live on Google Playground. That’s the new consumer creation platform that Google announced today.

You can create something in an hour, and perhaps you won’t have the patience to spend more time on it. But you can shoot for higher quality bars.

The goal with Unity Spark is not to make the fastest tool to build a game, but to build a game that you really want to build. If you have something in your head, you can try to build it. As you refine it, the quality can get better and better.

The ceiling is high for the quality of game you can build. You could spend hours with the tool and perhaps build a simple 2D puzzle game. But there are those who will be able to use it to build a high-end role-playing game.

Unity is still finalizing the commercial model. But there will be a level of free access with Unity Spark, and there will be levels that you pay for. Details will come later.
