The tech giant is letting Claude, Open Claw, and other AI agents control your thermostat, lights, and cameras through a standardized protocol
Google’s new Home MCP integration allows third-party AI tools to access, control, and analyze your connected devices through the Model Context Protocol, a standardized framework for AI interoperability.
The integration means AI agents from companies that aren’t Google, including Anthropic’s Claude, Open Claw, and Hermes, can now securely interact with everything in your Google Home ecosystem. Thermostats, lights, cameras, event history: all of it is on the table.
How the protocol works #
Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is essentially a common language that lets AI agents talk to external tools and data sources without needing custom-built connections for each one.
Google’s MCP server for its Home developer ecosystem provides a “search_documents” tool that enables accurate documentation retrieval. Developers can access the server endpoint globally, and it works without authentication for testing purposes, though production use can be secured through Google Cloud’s API key authentication.
The integration “allows any AI agents that support MCP, including Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes or Open Claw, to securely work with all of the devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem,” said Taylor Lehman, group product manager at Google Home & Nest.
Compatible AI clients span a surprisingly wide range: Google’s own Antigravity tools, Claude Code, Cursor, and even GitHub Copilot running through VS Code.

Third-party MCP servers have already popped up from independent developers, offering device control capabilities through Google’s Smart Device Management API paired with OAuth authentication.
The bigger Gemini for Home picture #
The Gemini for Home roadmap includes camera intelligence, proactive automations that anticipate your needs rather than waiting for commands, and enhanced natural language interfaces. The rollout is expected to expand significantly through 2025 and 2026.
The integration also bridges Google’s Home ecosystem with Matter and Thread specifications, two smart home connectivity standards. By funneling live updates from these specifications through the MCP server, Google is positioning itself as the connective tissue between hardware standards and AI capabilities.
What this means for the AI agent landscape #
For developers, instead of relying on vague web searches to figure out how to integrate with Google Home devices, they can use language models to discover and engage with tools directly through the MCP server.
