Google Meet is more than just a feature in [Google Workspace](/office-suites/88105/google-g-suite); it’s an approachable and capable [video conferencing](/video-conferencing-software/9067/the-best-video-conferencing-software) platform for everything from workplace meetings to personal video calls. Everyone (including free users) benefits from HD video quality and a user-friendly setup, while premium plans include advanced features, such as Gemini AI smarts, meeting recordings, and Q&A tools. Google Meet is an attractive solution if you need a casual video chat platform that participants can easily access via their Google accounts, or your business already uses Google Workspace. Still, for the latter group, the emphasis on online support resources and the lack of confidential end-to-end encryption could pose problems. As such, [Zoom Workplace](/video-conferencing-software/149167/zoom-one), with its more extensive collection of integrations and support resources, as well as the enterprise-focused [Webex by Cisco](/reviews/8743/cisco-webex-meetings) remain our Editors’ Choice winners.

## Pricing: A Generous Free Plan, With Reasonable Subscriptions

With a free Google account, you can host one-on-one Google Meet meetings that last up to 24 hours and group meetings with up to 100 participants for up to an hour. Free users get support for 720p streaming. Of course, you also get 15GB of [Google Drive](/file-syncing-and-backup/15854/google-drive) storage, access to the [Google Docs](/office-suites/86494/google-docs-sheets-and-slides) editors, a Gmail address, and more.

Google offers a variety of premium Google Meet features through Google Workspace plans for organizations and Google AI (formerly Google One) subscriptions for individuals. These plans also increase your account storage and introduce features in other Google products.

Workspace plans are complex: [Google Meet’s premium features page](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/10459644?hl=en#zippy=%2Clearn-which-premium-meet-features-are-available) lists 18 options, each with dozens of restrictions. The Business Workspace Starter edition ($7 per month per user, billed annually) unlocks group meetings of up to 24 hours but otherwise adds few Google Meet features. The Business Standard edition ($14 per user per month, billed annually) adds 1080p video, breakout rooms, meeting recording, transcripts, a waiting room, up to 150 participants, and other common features. Google Meet supports [up to 500 active meeting participants](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/7317473?hl=en#zippy=%2Cparticipant-limits), depending on your plan.

Individuals can get a [Google AI Plus 2TB](https://one.google.com/about/plans?g1_landing_page=60) plan ($99.99 per year) to get 1080p video, meeting recording, and other premium Google account features. The less expensive Google AI Plus subscription does not include premium Google Meet features, but pricier [Google AI Pro and Ultra plans](https://one.google.com/about/google-ai-plans/?) (Starting at $19.99 per month) bring additional features, such as automated note-taking, speech translation, and studio lighting.

Google Meet’s free plan is particularly generous. Zoom Meetings limits free users to 360p video quality and to one-on-one calls lasting up to an hour. Google Meet's liberal limits and the fact that it comes installed on Android phones make it suitable for personal calls. That said, Apple's [FaceTime](/video-conferencing-software/157183/screen-sharing-talk-on-android-14-easy-facetime-tips-for-your-next-video-chat) supports 1080p video calls for free.

Paid Google Workspace plans, which bundle Google Meet, are an excellent value. Zoom Workplace's Pro tier ($14.16 per user per month, billed annually) is similar in concept to Google Meet's Business Starter edition, for example, but the latter's productivity tools are far more mature. Webex by Cisco’s Webex Meet plan ($12 per user per month, billed annually) has a lower starting price than Google’s Business Standard plan if your business primarily needs a meeting solution; however, it doesn’t include a comprehensive set of email, calendar, document creation, and file storage tools.

For individuals, a Google AI Plus 2TB plan costs about the same as similar [cloud storage](/file-syncing-and-backup/3682/the-best-cloud-storage-and-file-sharing-services-for-2020) plans and unlocks useful extras in Google Meet. Apple’s 2TB [iCloud+](/file-syncing-and-backup/40428/apple-icloud-drive) plan costs $9.99 per month and includes email privacy features.

## Interface and Ease of Use: Simple, With Comprehensive Features

Google Meet's web version officially supports Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on [ChromeOS](/operating-systems/117070/google-chrome-os), Linux, macOS, and Windows. Android and iOS apps are also available. Google doesn't offer a desktop app for Meet, but you can install it as a [progressive web app (PWA)](/mobile-apps/157262/turn-websites-into-apps-how-to-use-progessive-web-apps).

The web app’s interface is intuitive and free of clutter. Simply sign in and head to the Google Meet website to schedule meetings or see upcoming ones. The Android and iOS apps work similarly, with a streamlined view of your upcoming meetings. Alternatively, you can create and join meetings directly from Google Calendar. You don't need a Google account to join someone else’s meeting, only the browser link they provide. iOS users can even [join Google Meet calls directly from Safari](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/06/join-google-meet-calls-from-safari-on-iOS-devices.html).

For any meeting, Google Meet intuitively guides you through setup, requesting camera and microphone permissions as needed. The experience is fast and easy on both the mobile apps and the web version.

I’ve used Google Meet for nearly a decade across multiple jobs, and I’ve always found it simple. Whether I was speaking with coworkers, interviewing sources, or evaluating job applicants, everyone has always seemed to have an intuitive grasp on how Google Meet works. You can count on the people you meet with to quickly understand how it works.

## Help and Support: Detailed Documentation, But Lacking the Human Touch

Google Meet has comprehensive online documentation and community forums to help you troubleshoot issues. Both resources should come up when you search the web for assistance.

Google Workspace administrators can contact Google’s concierge for support with Google Meet issues via the Google Admin console. These support options are generally chat- or email-based, although phone support might also be available. The exact options will depend on your organization’s Google Workspace plan. Google also sells [enhanced support add-ons](https://workspace.google.com/support/). Individual Google AI subscribers can [reach out to Google One support](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9003266?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop#:~:text=Get%20help%20with%20Google%20One) via chat, email, or phone. Google Meet doesn't provide a button to contact support directly from the interface, unlike [Intermedia AnyMeeting](/first-looks/123715/intermedia-anymeeting) and Zoom Workplace. Webex by Cisco gives all paying customers access to phone support, which some businesses might prefer.

Google Meet’s online documentation has always been helpful enough that I’ve never needed to contact support. That’s a good thing because I, like most Google Meet users, am not an admin in my Workspace organization and don't have that privilege. You most likely have to go through your organization's support channels for technical help.

## Integrations: More Focused on Workspace Than Meet

Of course, Google Meet works seamlessly across Google Workspace apps. You can schedule meetings and view upcoming meetings in Google Calendar. Google Meet saves recordings to Google Drive. Gemini can generate meeting summaries and email them to you in Gmail. Google Meet automatically saves text chat threads from meetings in Google Chat, Google’s chat app for teams.

The [Google Workspace Marketplace](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace) has an extensive collection of integrations for Google Workspace, including [a Works with Meet section](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/search/?host=meet). Many of the third-party apps here focus on other apps, such as Gmail and Google Calendar, but some have tie-ins with Meet. For example, [the Google Calendar app for Slack](https://slack.com/marketplace-pages/google-calendar) lets you join Google Meet meetings right from the chat platform. But there's no official Google Meet app for [Slack](/productivity-2/40141/slack). In this respect, Google Meet feels more like a feature of Google Workspace than a core product. A much deeper collection of [integrations](https://marketplace.zoom.us/) is available for Zoom Meetings, for comparison. Webex by Cisco also has a [broad selection](https://apphub.webex.com/).

## Performance and Quality: High-Quality Video for Everyone

I tested Google Meet on an Android phone, an iPad, a MacBook, and a Windows 11 laptop with a reliable connection. Google Meet provided smooth, high-quality video on all these devices. Anecdotally, I’ve used Google Meet extensively across multiple jobs for many years, and it has consistently worked well in both one-on-one and small group meetings. I’ve only encountered stuttering and other video problems when participants have internet connection issues on their end.

As mentioned, the free Google Meet plan supports 720p video, while most paid plans bump the maximum quality to 1080p. The latter resolution looks somewhat sharper, but even the lower video quality resolution is crisp enough for an online meeting. You can configure a specific maximum video quality in Google Meet’s settings window during a meeting, but Google Meet automatically chooses the best quality based on your connection. It also automatically scales video quality based on the video frame size: a small browser window or video thumbnail will show lower-quality video than a larger one, naturally.

In my testing, Google Meet switched to 720p and 1080p video when appropriate, using a lower video quality only for smaller windows and preview panes. (Google Meet doesn’t show the precise resolution of the video it receives or sends at any given time, but I used Google Chrome’s chrome://webrtc-internals** **diagnostic page to monitor it.)

Any Google Meet account can receive 1080p video, but only paid Google accounts can send it. If your Google account has access to 1080p video in Google Meet, you’ll still only see a 720p picture if you call a free Google Meet user. That free user may, however, see your video at up to 1080p. This setup is somewhat confusing. I’d like Google Meet to simply standardize on 1080p for everyone.

## Features: Gemini AI Notes, Text Chat, and Webcam Effects

Google Meet includes a wide range of impressive features, from emoji reactions and hand raises to screen presentations and text chat. It [supports Apple Reactions](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/13151720?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop) on iOS and macOS; users can send emoji reactions by making gestures (such as a thumbs up) in front of their cameras.

### Gemini: AI-Powered Notes and Transcripts

Google Meet can transcribe recorded meetings and use Gemini AI to take notes about them. It saves the recording and transcript to your Google Drive. It also emails you Gemini-based summaries of your meetings afterward. Executive summaries are a useful way to take stock of a meeting's major points at a glance. A “Take Notes for Me” button in the Google Meet app on your phone or the website on your computer lets you record in-person meetings in a similar way. Google Meet will record the meeting from your device’s microphone, transcribe the text, and use Gemini to generate a summary.

Google Meet has an AI-powered [real-time translation feature](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/workspace/google-meet-langauge-translation-ai/) that translates speech between a handful of languages. It supports English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Google says it is experimental, and I had mixed results: The AI-generated translated speech sounded natural, which was impressive. However, the translations to English often weren't accurate, although this might be a result of my poor French accent. I still don't recommend relying on the accuracy of the real-time translation tool for important business meetings.

### Backgrounds and Effects: AI-Powered Makeup, Filters, and Touch-Ups

Meet’s background and effect features are comprehensive. In addition to blurring your camera background or replacing it with a still image, Google Meet lets you generate a background image with AI. It also has filters that let you transform your image by adding silly glasses and hats, or turn you into an animated character that moves while you speak. Google Meet’s portrait touch-up features and virtual makeup features all work smoothly, and you can tweak them until you’re happy with your appearance. Google Meet proudly advertises this feature as “AI-powered makeup.” Although I don’t wear makeup, I was surprised by how realistic Google Meet’s red lipstick looked when I applied it.

### Meeting Tools: All the Expected Video Chat Features

Google Meet’s feature set is extensive, with breakout rooms, polls, timers, Q&A, and a panel of controls that lets the host set permissions in the meeting. As mentioned, the exact features available to you depend on which of Google’s numerous plans you or your organization pays for.

## Security: Is Google Meet Safe?

Google [says](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/9852160?hl=en) it uses industry-standard encryption for meetings to prevent eavesdropping. Only specific people on the meeting’s Google Calendar event can join; others must “knock” and get approval from the meeting host before joining. Google has extensive options to secure Google accounts, including two-step verification with authentication apps or text messages.

Google’s optional [Advanced Protection Program](https://landing.google.com/advancedprotection/) for high-risk accounts adds extra protection against phishing. Google Meet doesn't offer end-to-end encryption for Google Workspace users, meaning that Google employees could technically see the contents of your meetings, although Google says it wouldn’t. End-to-end encryption is [an optional feature](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/12387251?hl=en) only for personal account users who make one-on-one and what Google calls “legacy group calls.” I’d like Google to extend end-to-end encryption to organizations for confidential meetings, as Intermedia AnyMeeting and Zoom Workplace do.
