Gemini-powered conversational tools let users search emails, draft documents, and organize notes entirely by voice
Google just turned its most-used productivity apps into something closer to a personal assistant you can actually talk to. The company announced Gmail Live, Docs Live, and a revamped voice mode for Google Keep at its I/O event on May 19, all powered by Gemini AI and designed to let users interact with their data through natural conversation.
The features are rolling out first to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on Android and iOS in the US this summer, with a Workspace business preview to follow. Limited beta testing for Gmail Live and Keep was already underway by late June.
What the new voice features actually do #
Gmail Live lets users ask spoken questions about their inbox and get synthesized, context-aware answers. Instead of typing “school events” into a search bar and scrolling through dozens of threads, you can ask something like “What events does my son Jack have in school?” and get a compiled response drawn from your emails.
Docs Live takes a similar approach to document creation. Users can tell the system what they need, and it will draft documents by pulling information from Gmail, Google Drive, and the open web.
Google Keep’s update can now take unstructured voice input and transform it into organized notes and lists.
The subscription play #
Google’s decision to gate these features behind its AI Pro and Ultra tiers is deliberate. Free Gmail users, all two billion of them, won’t get access at launch.
The initial rollout being limited to US English on mobile devices suggests Google is being careful about accuracy. That caution explains the phased approach: paid individual subscribers first, then Workspace business customers.
