Google today announced an “experimental gaming platform” called Playground that lets you “create, play, and share” browser-based games. The goal is to “make game creation more approachable and ignite everyday creativity.”
This Google Labs experiment leverages Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria models with a “custom harness to make game creation more accessible.”
It starts with a chat interface that lets you “direct the game just by typing what you want to build.” You can decide between a 2D or 3D game and specify whether it’s single or multi-player. Google offers starter prompts that you can remix and a guided development experience.
Playground lets you “tweak the physics, rewrite the rules, customize the characters, or overhaul the environment.”
Google today also previewed a Unity Spark integration that allows for “robust, professional-level mechanics, high-fidelity 3D capabilities, and the flexibility of the Unity runtime.”
The accessibility of Playground and world-class game-building expertise of Unity provides the building blocks for an ecosystem where users can start with a simple text prompt and eventually grow into building immersive experiences with Unity
These are browser-based games that are playable on phone or laptop. Once you’re done, games can be kept private, shared via link, or published to the Playground Explore gallery for everyone. Titles go through safety (community guideline) screening along with user reporting.
Players can rate games, while there’s support for in-game leaderboards with Play Games profile integration.
Google is rolling out Playground starting in the US. Free users will be able to generate games, with expanded access tied to Google One membership.
