August 25, 2026, (Inside AI) — Alphabet's Google on Tuesday expanded its Gemini Enterprise platform with a dedicated offering for legal professionals, a move that intensifies the competition to supply AI tools to an industry racing to adopt the technology.
The new product, Gemini Enterprise for Legal, integrates with legal software and data platforms and includes a set of AI agents designed to handle routine and complex legal work with limited human oversight. Google said the goal is to let lawyers focus on higher-value services while keeping client data secure and confidential.
Google Cloud has become one of Alphabet's fastest-growing businesses, and the company is betting that industry-specific AI will deepen its enterprise foothold. Alongside the legal launch, Google unveiled tools for financial services and said other sectors would follow.
The legal industry's AI adoption is still in its early stages, but investment is accelerating. A 2026 Deloitte report found law firms are pouring resources into generative AI for research, drafting, and client management. Google's move positions it directly against rivals like Anthropic, which has also expanded enterprise offerings in the legal sector, and Thomson Reuters, which on Monday launched its own large language model, Thomson 1.0, trained on proprietary legal content.
Google said its platform will connect directly and securely to legal technology platforms from Thomson Reuters, legal AI developer Harvey, and data analytics firm LexisNexis, among others. That interoperability is critical because law firms rarely rely on a single vendor for research, document management, and practice tools.
Law Firms Demand Flexibility and Security #
Amrita Mehrok, a Google Cloud product director, said the new offering is designed to be flexible, allowing firms to choose among AI models embedded in the platform. This approach acknowledges that no single model fits every legal task, from contract review to e-discovery.
Several large law firms have already formed strategic partnerships with AI providers or are building their own platforms. Google named Weil Gotshal, Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, and Williams & Connolly as collaborators on Gemini Enterprise for Legal.
Weil Gotshal's co-managing partner Jonathon Soler said clients increasingly expect their lawyers to be using AI and taking advantage of its efficiencies.
Cleary Gottlieb managing partner Jeffrey Karpf said the firm's collaboration with Google would allow it to "be involved in the creation of useful tools for law firms deploying AI."
A Crowded Race for Legal AI Market Share #
The legal AI market is becoming crowded. Thomson Reuters, which owns the Westlaw legal research database, launched Thomson 1.0 on Monday, describing it as built on open-source technology and drawing on decades of its own authoritative legal content. The company is both a competitor and a potential integration partner for Google, a dynamic that reflects the tangled alliances forming across the industry.
Law firms are using generative AI not only for legal research and drafting but also for business operations like client intake and case management. The pressure to cut costs and improve efficiency is driving adoption, even as questions about accuracy, confidentiality, and ethical obligations remain unresolved.
Google's expansion into legal AI is part of a broader strategy to dominate enterprise AI by offering industry-specific solutions. The company launched Gemini Enterprise for business customers in October 2025, and the legal and financial services tools represent the next phase of that push.
The outcome of this race will depend on which providers can offer the most seamless integration with existing legal workflows, the strongest security guarantees, and the most reliable outputs. For now, Google's announcement signals that the legal profession is no longer a niche market for AI, but a primary battleground for the technology's biggest players.
