Google Discover Tests Dive Deeper Feature

Google is testing a new "Dive deeper" feature in Google Discover that opens an AI-generated short topic overview instead of taking users directly to a publisher's article, Robby Stein announced on X. Stein said the overview includes "prominent links to related stories, community reactions & original reporting," and that Google will test the experience on videos first and experiment with multiple designs in the weeks ahead. The AI-generated overview carries a disclaimer that it "can make mistakes," and the feature is expected to reduce traffic sent from Google to publishers.

Google is testing a new feature in Google Discover named "Dive deeper." When you click on it, it does not take you to a publisher's article, instead, it takes you to an AI-generated short topic overview with links to some other articles which do take you to the publisher and community reaction. Here is a screenshot of the feature; as you can see on the left is the short topic overview, "generated with Al" that Google says also "which can make mistakes." When you click on "Dive deeper" you are taken to a longer version that does contain links to publisher articles: Robby Stein explained that "by tapping “Dive deeper,” you’ll see a short topic overview with prominent links to related stories, community reactions & original reporting." I am not sure I like this, it will probably lead to even less traffic from Google to publishers because the content Google is generating is AI-generated and gives the full context to the user - so why would a user click?
