The company's aggressive integration of generative AI into search is reshaping how billions access information, keeping users inside its ecosystem and starving external websites of traffic.
Since last year, Google has introduced AI Mode, which replaces traditional hyperlink results with conversational answers from its Gemini chatbot. Users now write queries three times longer than before and spend up to nine extra minutes inside AI Mode, according to studies tallied by The New York Times. A Growth Memo study found that in about 75% of sessions, users never leave AI Mode for the web.
For publishers, this shift is catastrophic. "For publishers, Google Zero is already here," said Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of The Verge. "It wasn't until AI Mode arrived that people could see that the slow creep was about to hit a tipping point." The open web, built on links and referrals, is seeing traffic plummet as Google's AI answers queries directly. Google denies endangering the web. In a blog post last August, Liz Reid, vice president of search, said the company sends a "relatively stable" number of clicks and that reports of decline rely on "flawed methodologies." A spokesperson added that AI features "send billions of clicks to the web every week" and highlight links. But critics argue the data tells a different story.
Cloudflare reports that over 50% of web traffic is now nonhuman, and human traffic to business sites dropped nearly 40% between June 2025 and April 2026. Wikipedia saw an 8% decline in human visitors as bots scrape its content for AI training. "My work is to ensure that people don't forget about us because Google's user interface changed," said Selena Deckelmann, Wikimedia Foundation's chief product and technology officer.
The trend echoes long-standing warnings. Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, wrote in a 2024 essay that tech giants have built "walled gardens" focused on profit, and AI has exacerbated these issues. Google's moves contrast with its founding ethos. In 2004, co-founder Larry Page wrote of a "well-functioning society" needing "abundant, free and unbiased access to high-quality information."
Regulators are stepping in. Last month, Britain's Competition and Markets Authority mandated that Google include clear attribution links in AI responses and allow sites to opt out of AI summaries. Google is applying these changes globally. Yet for some, the door remains open. "Whether it uses a traditional search method or AI, I think Google is still facilitating access to the open internet," said Tori Noble, staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
But the economic damage is real. In May, Vox Media sold several publications, with CEO Jim Bankoff citing the "decimation of search traffic." Patel noted the contradiction: Google claims to send more traffic while publishers' businesses "are getting destroyed." The open web's future hangs on whether AI search can coexist with a healthy ecosystem of independent sites.
The Shifting Economics of Web Traffic #
Research underscores the scale of change. A 2025 study on AI-driven search behavior found that generative responses reduce click-through rates by over 30% compared to traditional links. Cloudflare's data reveals that bot traffic now dominates, with AI crawlers indexing content without sending human visitors back. This breaks the implicit bargain of the web: visibility in exchange for traffic.
Wikipedia's response includes charging AI firms for data access and promoting its own app to bypass Google. The Wikimedia Foundation's move signals a broader shift where content creators seek direct relationships with audiences. Deckelmann's strategy highlights how platforms must adapt when the referral model collapses.
Google's new features, like "preferred sources" and website previews, aim to push users outward. But the Growth Memo study suggests they are insufficient. The company's AI Mode keeps users engaged within its interface, reducing the need to click through. This aligns with broader industry trends where AI assistants become the primary information layer.
Regulatory and Technical Crossroads #
The UK's mandate is a test case for balancing innovation with web health. By requiring attribution and opt-out mechanisms, regulators hope to preserve the open web's economic foundation. However, enforcement remains challenging, and Google's global application may set a precedent. The UK's digital markets framework provides a model for other jurisdictions.
Technical solutions like the Robots Exclusion Protocol and paywalls offer partial defenses, but they cannot fully offset the traffic loss. The rise of AI agents that perform searches autonomously further complicates the picture. Google's recent addition of AI "agents" to its search box suggests the trend will accelerate, potentially deepening the crisis for publishers.
As Google evolves, the internet faces a paradox: the company that once organized the world's information now increasingly contains it. Whether this AI fence protects or isolates remains an open question, but the stakes for the open web have never been higher.
