Google says study notebooks are rolling out globally in the languages supported by the Gemini app. The company previously said the feature would reach school-issued accounts, including users under 18, as part of its education rollout. Personal Gemini accounts generally require users to be at least 13, or the applicable minimum age in their country; school administrators control access for managed accounts. [2][4]
The accompanying student subscription offer differs by region. Eligible students in the United States can receive one year of Google AI Pro, including 5TB of storage and higher Gemini usage limits. Students outside the U.S. are offered Google AI Plus, with 400GB of storage and lower Gemini limits. Google did not disclose exact prompt caps for these student offers in the announcement. [1]
How the data rules differ #
For personal Gemini accounts, Google says saved activity may be used to develop and improve its services, including generative AI models, with human review. Users can turn off Keep Activity or use temporary chats, although some processing still occurs for service responses and safety. [3] Chats with Gemini notebooks follow those same activity rules, while notebook source files are not used directly to train Google’s generative AI models. [3]School accounts operate under separate Workspace for Education protections. Google says those chats are not human-reviewed or used to train generative AI models, and administrators can turn Gemini features on or off for students. [5] OpenAI’s comparable Study Mode is available globally across ChatGPT plans and can work with uploaded class materials, quizzes and flashcards, but it follows ChatGPT’s regular account, model and rate-limit rules rather than offering a separate student hub.
