# Good News, Everyone: DLSS 5 Only Needs One GPU Now. Bad News: That GPU Costs What a Laptop Used To.

Back in March, I wrote about

The short version: Nvidia unveiled DLSS 5 at GTC, running on a rig with two RTX 5090s, showed off a Resident Evil Requiem demo that immediately got dragged for "yassifying" Grace Ashcroft, and told everyone who was skeptical that they were "completely wrong." Nvidia's promise at the time was that DLSS 5 would be optimized down to a single GPU by the time it actually launched in the fall.

Well, it's fall. DLSS 5 officially

[launches September 3rd alongside NBA 2K27](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss-5-3d-guided-neural-rendering/), and I have to hand it to Nvidia: they actually hit that mark. According to their own post, since the initial announcement in March, they've gone from requiring dual RTX 5090s to running on a single GPU, with a claimed 5x performance improvement in six months. That's not nothing, and it's a real engineering accomplishment.

Good news, everyone: it only needs one GPU now.

Bad news, everyone: that GPU costs $800–1,200 more than it did in March.

## The Math Didn't Get Better, It Just Moved

Back in March, I priced the RTX 5090 at around $4,200 on the resale market, more than double its $1,999 MSRP. As of

[Tom's Hardware's most recent coverage](https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidias-controversial-dlss-5-will-launch-september-3-with-nba2k27-available-on-all-rtx-50-series-gpus-laptops-and-geforce-now), the RTX 5090 is now going for

**at least $5,000**.

So let's do the "solved" math:

**March:** DLSS 5 needs two RTX 5090s (~$4,200 each) = **~$8,400** just in GPUs, plus another $2,500+ in supporting hardware to actually run them, for a total system cost north of $10,000.

**September:** DLSS 5 needs one RTX 5090 = **~$5,000**, in a normal single-GPU gaming PC.

Worth being precise here: none of this is about MSRP. The RTX 5090's official price is still $1,999, unchanged since launch. Every number above is street price — what you'd actually pay a retailer or scalper today, which has floated somewhere between double and triple MSRP the entire time I've been writing about this. Nvidia doesn't control street price directly, but they absolutely control supply, and supply is the thing that's kept these prices inflated for the better part of a year.

So on paper, cutting the GPU requirement in half is an enormous improvement. But the single card you still need now costs, at street price, about what an entire second GPU cost back in March. Halving the hardware requirement should have roughly halved your out-of-pocket cost. Instead, the one GPU you still need got roughly 20% more expensive in the same six months, which ate most of the savings before you ever got to enjoy them.

Put another way: a single RTX 5090, today, at street price, costs about as much as a maxed-out 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Max chip, 48GB of RAM, and top-tier storage — a full laptop, screen, battery, keyboard, chassis, and all. Or, if you want the comparison I made in March, it's in the same neighborhood as the MSI Titan 18 HX I priced out as a joke last year, which I described at the time as "the most ridiculous consumer laptop on the market." That was supposed to be my example of pure hardware excess. A single graphics card is now knocking on its door.

You're not paying $5,000 for a computer anymore. You're paying $5,000 for the part of the computer that draws the pixels.

## Nvidia Actually Delivered on the Technical Promise

I want to be fair here, because I was skeptical in March and Nvidia proved that skepticism at least partially wrong. The "single GPU optimization coming Fall 2026" line I quoted back then, and rolled my eyes at, actually happened.

[Nvidia's own recap](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss-5-3d-guided-neural-rendering/) states outright that DLSS 5 now runs on a single GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU at up to 4K, using the Tensor Cores already on the card, with no second GPU dedicated purely to inference. That's a legitimate six-month turnaround on a hard technical problem, and I don't think it's fair to pretend it didn't happen just because I predicted it wouldn't.

[Devindra Hardawar at Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/2248399/nvidia-dlss-5-launches-nba-2k27-september-3/), who was one of the harsher early critics of DLSS 5, admits his hackles have cooled a bit after seeing more recent demos, calling the technology "relatively harmless" and noting that some of what he saw — like added shadow and texture depth in NBA 2K27 — could be a genuine improvement if developers apply it carefully, rather than cranking it to eleven the way Resident Evil Requiem did.

So no, this isn't a repeat of the "it'll be optimized later, trust us" pattern I called out in March. Nvidia did the work.

## The Launch Title Says Something, Too

The choice of NBA 2K27 as the flagship launch title is also a different pitch than what we saw in March. Resident Evil Requiem was chosen specifically because it runs on genuinely modest hardware (a GTX 1660 will run it) — meaning the AI "enhancement" had maximum room to look dramatic against an unimpressive baseline. NBA 2K27 is the opposite move: it's a series built entirely around photorealism and real-athlete likeness already, so there's less room for DLSS 5 to look like it's inventing a face rather than refining one. Nvidia's marketing leans on this directly, saying DLSS 5 preserves "the facial geometry scanned from real-world athletes" while enhancing skin, hair, and lighting on top of it.

There's also a toggle this time — DLSS Neural Rendering can be flipped on or off in Video Settings, and toggled live during gameplay with the F9 key. Whatever else is true about this technology, at least the player isn't locked into someone else's aesthetic choice by default.

None of that erases the awkward timing, though.

[Tom's Hardware notes](https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/nvidias-controversial-dlss-5-will-launch-september-3-with-nba2k27-available-on-all-rtx-50-series-gpus-laptops-and-geforce-now) that the DLSS 5 files leaked out of NBA 2K27's early access build just days before Nvidia officially confirmed the launch date — meaning, once again, the public found out about a major DLSS 5 deployment before Nvidia itself got to say anything about it. In March it was Capcom's own developers finding out at the same time as everyone else. This time it's Nvidia getting scooped by a data-mined DLL. Different flavor, same underlying problem: this technology keeps leaking before anyone official gets to frame the story.

## What We Still Don't Know: The Overhead

Here's the thing nobody has real numbers on yet: how much does DLSS 5 actually cost you in performance versus running the same scene with it off. Every frame-rate figure Nvidia has published so far — the 370fps at 4K, the 590fps at 1440p on a 5090 — is DLSS 5 on, first-party, single game, no independent side-by-side against DLSS 5 off. There's no published VRAM overhead either, which matters given this is a model doing real inference work on every single frame, not just occasionally interpolating like Frame Generation does.

This is exactly the kind of thing that gets answered fast once the tech is actually in reviewers' hands. Expect Digital Foundry, Gamers Nexus, and the usual crowd to have frame-time and VRAM breakdowns within days of the September 3rd launch. Until then, "up to 4K at 370fps" is a number with no denominator — impressive-sounding, but you can't tell from it whether DLSS 5 costs you 5% of your frame rate or 25%.

And honestly, that gap is part of why the initial reveal landed so badly. If Nvidia had shown a couple of restrained, side-by-side examples up front — this is what most teams will actually ship, here's the modest overhead, here's the option turned off — instead of cranking Grace Ashcroft up to eleven and daring people to be impressed, they'd have skipped a lot of the backlash entirely. Instead they went full Tool Time: "more power," max settings, biggest possible flex, and let that become the mental image of what DLSS 5 *is* — even though their own comparison shots for the ramen chef and the NBA athletes suggest most studios will run it a lot more subtly than that. You don't lead with the ceiling if you don't want people judging you by it.

## The Bottom Line

DLSS 5 hit its technical deadline. It's single-GPU, it has a real toggle, and the launch title makes a more coherent case for the tech than the Resident Evil Requiem demo did. Credit where it's due.

But the affordability story hasn't improved even a little. In March, I said the AI bubble was making your GPU more expensive whether you wanted AI features or not. Six months later, the feature that was supposed to prove AI could make games look better without needing a $10,000 rig now needs "only" a $5,000 GPU — a GPU that costs about as much as a maxed-out MacBook Pro, just for the part that draws the picture.

Nvidia solved the dual-GPU problem. They just didn't solve the price problem. And I'd bet that's not an accident — it's a lot easier to hit a performance target than it is to hit a price target when your buyers aren't the ones setting demand anymore.
