*An AI agent just walked a UK donor through setting up a real Direct Debit, and the country's financial regulator was watching the whole time.*

On September 22, 2026, GoCardless completed what it calls the UK's first agentic account-to-account payment: a donor talked with an AI agent embedded on the fintech's site about the anti-poverty charity Trussell, picked a monthly gift of £5, £10 or £15, and watched the agent carry the transaction all the way to a live Direct Debit mandate. The donor only stepped in once, to confirm their own bank details.

No forms. No redirect to a separate checkout page. The agent explained what Trussell does, walked through the giving options, and set up the recurring payment. The donor never left the conversation.

The trial ran inside the Financial Conduct Authority's AI Live Testing programme, a supervised sandbox where firms build and run real AI applications under regulatory watch instead of in a lab. GoCardless is one of eight firms in the programme's second cohort. The others: Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group's Scottish Widows, UBS, Experian, Coadjute, Palindrom and Aereve. Applications opened in January 2026, testing began in April. The FCA expects to publish its evaluation by the first quarter of 2027, with London-based AI assurance firm Advai helping run the checks.

That regulatory scaffolding is the whole point. An AI agent that recommends a donation is just a chatbot. An AI agent that actually executes the bank transfer is something else. Nobody in the UK had done that live before this week, with a regulator checking the work as it happened.

Oracle's credit risk is spiraling as it borrows on its own balance sheet to fund AI data centers, while Meta and CoreWeave route billions in similar debt through off-balance-sheet joint ventures and GPU-backed loans. Trussell runs the food bank network behind more than 1,300 outlets across the UK. It isn't a random pilot partner. Recurring donations are low-stakes, repeat business: exactly the kind of transaction a regulator and a wary public will tolerate an AI agent handling first. Christianne McKenzie, Trussell's head of individual giving, said the chat-based checkout gives supporters an easier way to start donating. And if the agent gets something wrong, it costs the charity a few pounds a month, not a mortgage payment.

GoCardless CEO Hiroki Takeuchi framed the launch around a different number. 64% of UK consumers say they're open to letting AI manage their recurring payments, as long as they keep control over spending limits or a final approval step. That caveat is the one that matters. People aren't asking for full autonomy. They want an agent doing the paperwork while a human still holds the veto.

GoCardless isn't a startup experimenting on the side, either. The company, now owned by Dutch payments group Mollie, processes more than $130 billion a year across over 30 countries and plugs into more than 350 platforms. Building agentic checkout into that pipe is a bet that account-to-account transfers, not card networks, become the rail AI agents prefer, since bank payments skip the card fees and chargeback disputes that complicate agent-initiated purchases.

Morgan Stanley has estimated AI agents could handle up to $385 billion of US e-commerce spending by 2030. GoCardless's donation flow is a rounding error against that figure. But it's the first live, regulator-supervised proof that an agent can pull off the hardest part of that forecast: moving money between real bank accounts, not just recommending what to buy.

Expect rivals to move fast now. Every bank and fintech holding a slot in the FCA's testing programme has a working example to react to, and the ones least anxious about liability and fraud controls will be the ones that ship an agentic checkout of their own first.
