# GitHub down in worldwide, multihour outage - again

GitHub has played a central role in the lives of millions of software engineers for well over a decade. With each successive outage this year, that role looks harder and harder to justify.

An array of GitHub services, including pull requests, API requests, and Actions, were unavailable or severely impacted by an outage Monday morning that took hold just as the East Coast of the US logged on for work after the weekend. It's just the latest in a series of outages that has plagued Microsoft's coding service this year amid an explosion in AI-generated software that [Microsoft predicted several years ago would arrive](https://stratechery.com/2024/interviews-with-microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-and-cto-kevin-scott-about-the-ai-platform-shift/?ref=thestack.technology) thanks to large-language models.

"We are experiencing high error rates around 20% for web experiences and api traffic," GitHub reported several times this morning on [its status page for the incident](https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/zkxwbgr0cnmx?ref=thestack.technology). "Archive downloads and raw repository content downloads are experiencing an approximate 50% error rate."
