The Python application runs Gemma 3 1B via Ollama for local inference, so personal file metadata never leaves the user's machine. The project was submitted to the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4 under the 'Ghost in the Machine' theme.", "body_md": "*Every forgotten file has a story. What if AI could help you find it again?*\n\n*This is a submission for the [Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine](https://dev.to/challenges/hacktoberfest-week4-2026-10-26)*\n\nGhostFile is a **local-first AI-powered file investigator** that helps users rediscover forgotten files hiding in their computers.\n\nOver time, our devices collect hundreds or even thousands of files. Old documents, duplicate images, forgotten downloads, and files we no longer remember saving can easily get lost.\n\nI interpreted the *Ghost in the Machine* theme as giving a voice to these forgotten digital memories.\n\nGhostFile scans a user-selected folder and helps identify:\n\nGhostFile is designed to help users understand their digital clutter without automatically deleting or moving anything.\n\n**GitHub Repository:** [[https://github.com/padmalochini27-del/GhostFile](https://github.com/padmalochini27-del/GhostFile)]\n\nBuilt with Python and Streamlit.\n\nI built GhostFile using open-source tools and local AI inference.\n\n**Technology stack:**\n\nThe application scans selected folders, collects file metadata, identifies older files and duplicate files, and presents the results through a Streamlit dashboard.\n\nFor the AI component, I integrated **Gemma 3 1B through Ollama**, allowing the user to interact with a local AI investigator.\n\nThe goal is to keep the investigation local rather than uploading personal file information to an external AI service.\n\nOpen innovation made it possible to experiment with AI without depending entirely on closed, paid APIs.\n\nUsing Ollama and Gemma 3 1B gave me the opportunity to explore local inference, experiment with an open-weight model, and build an application that prioritizes privacy.\n\nIt also made this project more accessible to users who want to experiment with AI on their own computers.\n\nFor me, open innovation is not just about using open-source tools. It is about having the freedom to understand, experiment, modify, and build something useful with them.\n\nWe usually remember the important files we create. But what about the files we downloaded months ago, the documents we saved for later, or the images buried somewhere in a folder?\n\nThey quietly remain on our devices, almost like digital ghosts.\n\nGhostFile is my attempt to bring those forgotten files back into view.\n\nBecause sometimes, finding an old file can bring back a memory we didn't even know we had forgotten.\n\n[**.** Best Use of Gemma]\n\n**Built with curiosity, open-source AI, and a little bit of ghost hunting. 👻**", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ghostfile-the-ghost-of-forgotten-files-bringing-local-ai-to-your-digital", "canonical_source": "https://dev.to/padma_lochini_30f5da896a1/ghostfile-the-ghost-of-forgotten-files-bringing-local-ai-to-your-digital-memories-1b63", "published_at": "2026-10-31 18:19:23+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-10-31 18:22:25.876770+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-tools", "generative-ai", "large-language-models", "ai-products"], "entities": ["GhostFile", "Ollama", "Gemma 3 1B", "Streamlit", "Python", "Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge"], "also_reported_by": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ghostfile-the-ghost-of-forgotten-files-bringing-local-ai-to-your-digital", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ghostfile-the-ghost-of-forgotten-files-bringing-local-ai-to-your-digital.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ghostfile-the-ghost-of-forgotten-files-bringing-local-ai-to-your-digital.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/ghostfile-the-ghost-of-forgotten-files-bringing-local-ai-to-your-digital.jsonld"}}
