Gemini will create mobile & desktop apps in the future as AI Studio for Android, iOS is canceled

Google has canceled its planned AI Studio mobile app for Android and iOS, which had over 800,000 pre-orders, in favor of integrating app creation capabilities directly into the Gemini app on mobile and desktop. The AI Studio team announced the decision on X, stating that instead of a separate app, apps will emerge naturally through conversations with Gemini. Work on the AI Studio website will continue.

At I/O 2026, Google teased an AI Studio app for Android and iOS. This mobile application has been canceled in favor of what sounds like a deep Gemini app integration.

The AI Studio app was supposed to let you “capture an idea on the go and have a working prototype ready by the time you get to your desk.” It was an alternative to using aistudio.google.com in your mobile browser.

The AI Studio team today shared that over 800,000 users pre-ordered the app on Google Play and the App Store in a sign that “people are interested in building software on the go.”

However, Google is no longer releasing this app: “instead of asking you to download yet another app we’ve decided to take an entirely different approach: one where apps emerge naturally, in the course of your everyday conversations with Gemini.”

we’re partnering with the Gemini app team to make that a reality on mobile and desktop

Work on the AI Studio website will continue for “those who want to go from an idea to a prompt to a business.” The mobile listings have been pulled. In terms of availability:

the teams are working hard on bringing this to life, more to share on this later.

9to5Google’s Take

Google releasing a more dedicated mobile experience for AI Studio would have been fine, and seems like something the company should have the resources to also do. That said, the Progressive Web App works perfectly today.

What’s interesting about today’s announcement is what it reveals about the future of the Gemini app. Gemini being able to create apps that help address whatever problem or need you have while chatting sounds like the natural next step for generative user interfaces.

The implications for mobile could be profound. For example, say you want to start a garden and don’t have any prior knowledge. Imagine Gemini creating an app that teaches you the basics, keeps track of what you planted, and gives you reminders to water and weed. A simple application could have tabs for lessons, logging, and reminders.

This is already possible with Gemini Canvas and PWAs today, but a native app, especially on Android, could go a long way.
