- Google is refining Gemini Live’s redesigned Android interface with another small UI change.
- A new live translation option is rolling out, letting Gemini translate conversations between languages in real time.
- The update appears to be a gradual server-side rollout, with some devices getting the refreshed UI before the translation feature arrives.
For most of its existence, Gemini Live’s interface barely changed. That shifted in April when Google began testing a redesign that ditched the dedicated full-screen experience. Now, Google appears to be quietly refining that experience again, and the latest change could be much more useful than another visual refresh. A new “Turn on live translation” option appears to be rolling out to some users, enabling Gemini Live to translate conversations between languages in real time.
We’ve spotted the new option in the voice settings menu, directly beneath the voice picker. Once enabled, Gemini Live can translate spoken statements as the conversation continues. In our tests, we set Gemini to detect Hindi and translate it into English, with translation captions appearing as the conversation continued.
That could make Gemini Live considerably more useful for multilingual conversations, whether you’re trying to communicate with someone who speaks another language or simply need help following along.
Google has also made a smaller change to the Live interface itself. In the current version, the keyboard button used to exit a Live session has been replaced by a much clearer X. It’s a tiny tweak, but it makes the button’s purpose immediately obvious and removes the need to rely on Android’s back gesture to leave Live. The “Live with Gemini” text at the top is also gone, while a new “Tap to interrupt” option now appears on the screen to stop the live session when you feel like it.
The change is particularly interesting when viewed alongside Google’s broader Gemini redesign. When Google’s Neural Expressive design landed in the Gemini Android app, it was hard not to be impressed. The vibrant colors, glowing gradients, and dynamic visuals gave Gemini a personality. If anything, the April Gemini Live redesign was already a step in this direction.
It introduced a pill-shaped container housing Gemini’s blue waveform, replacing the old prompt area, while camera and screen-sharing controls sat on the left. Microphone controls appeared on the right, making the continuous conversation feel less like a separate mode that takes over the entire phone.
It’s also a welcome sign that Google is thinking beyond aesthetics. Even with Neural Expressive, a cleaner interface isn’t necessarily better if it makes everyday tasks harder to find. These Gemini Live changes are smaller, but they add something far more valuable: utility.
The rollout appears to be gradual. Some devices have the refreshed UI with the translation option, while others are yet to receive the full update.
