Gemini app for macOS adding send and read iMessage integration

Google's Gemini app for macOS is adding an @messages Connected App that can read, search, and send messages in Apple Messages, appearing in Settings > Connected Apps after updating to Gemini for macOS version 1.116.5.889. The integration sends plain-text messages to contacts or phone numbers and reads recent conversations, unread messages, and message history, but cannot manage group membership, schedule or edit messages, send attachments, send tapback reactions, or generate images in automated workflows. As of the afternoon of the report, a server-side component was missing and @messages was not yet recognized in the prompt box.

However, as of this afternoon, a server-side component appears to be missing, with @messages not yet recognized in the prompt box. Recent updates to Gemini for macOS introduced a File Providers extension that shows “Add to Gemini” when you right-click on a file in Finder. This immediately adds the photo or document to the prompt box. It can be enabled in Settings Extensions. Google also added Images, Videos, and Daily Brief to the side panel.
