No generative AI in Gears of War E-Day – they’ve got a “kickass” art team

E-Day is the latest instalment in the Gears of War franchise, and a main-series return to the full name following main devs The Coalition’s simplified Gears 5 back in 2019. Anyway, we’ve been getting some further insight into Gears of War: E-Day, well ahead of its October 6 release date. We already know it’s “exclusive” to Xbox consoles – though it will still be available on PC.
The whole exclusivity thing just means it won’t be available on PlayStation 5, as Xbox returns to exclusives following a period of multi-console releases, including last year’s Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the original and the only GoW title available on a PlayStation to this day. Despite a leak suggesting otherwise, The Coalition insists a PS5 launch was never really planned.

At a recent group Q&A (attended by Eurogamer) during Summer Game Fest, The Coalition’s studio creative director, Matt Searcy, commented on E-Day for Sony’s PlayStation 5, saying, “Well, we never talked about it”. A previously leaked PEGI rating for the PS5 version, and a now-deleted trailer featuring the PS5 logo on the game’s cover art, suggested it was actually happening.
Now we know this definitely isn’t the case, as E-Day was officially announced for Xbox Series X/S and PC only. “It was never changed,” said studio brand director Nicole Fawcette, suggesting it was a simple mistake rather than a last-minute decision.

No generative AI in Gears of War E-Day – they’ve got a “kickass” art team
As for gen AI, a recent interview with IGN reveals ‘there was no use of generative AI in creating any part of Gears of War: E-Day. “We have a kickass concept art team, and our art book is going to rock,” says Matt Searcy (the same as above), alluding to the idea that The Coalition is proud of its designs and doesn’t fast-track the concepting stage with the use of generative AI art.
For players who wish to avoid generative AI in gaming, it’s a nice statement to hear officially being made. It remains a touchy topic in the world of game development, though that doesn’t stop game engine makers like Unity from fitting their tools and editors with AI tech. Capcom is another major developer shying away from generative AI, at least directly within game content.

61Would you buy a bare bones Steam Machine?Would you buy a variant of the Steam Machine with no RAM and/or no SSD and install them separately to help save on costs? No, I want the Steam Machine to be complete Yes, I would buy a RAM-less version Yes, I would buy an SSD-less version I'd buy a bare bones version with neither component
