Gaon Cable targets AI data centers with low-friction cables

Gaon Cable is targeting the AI data-center power infrastructure market with low-friction distribution cables that reduce installation friction by about 30% and extend cable-pulling distance by up to 45%, the company said Wednesday. The cables, first supplied to a North American semiconductor plant last year, are now used in AI data centers, and Gaon Cable holds a patent for the core material technology. CEO Jung Hyun said the company will expand globally with specialized distribution products.

Gaon Cable is targeting the AI data-center power infrastructure market with low-friction distribution cables designed to cut installation time and costs, the company said Wednesday.

The cables feature an improved outer sheath that reduces friction during installation by about 30 percent compared to conventional products. Gaon Cable said this can extend the cable-pulling distance by up to 45 percent while lowering labor requirements and construction costs.

Distribution cables are used in certain sections of artificial intelligence data centers depending on their design and construction requirements. As facilities grow larger and more power-intensive, Gaon Cable expects demand to increase for products that simplify installation.

The company first supplied the cables to a North American semiconductor plant last year and has since expanded their use to AI data centers.

Gaon Cable holds a patent for the product’s core material technology. Similar cables are made by only a limited number of manufacturers in North America and Europe, according to the company.

The cable-maker is also broadening its AI data-center power portfolio by drawing on the technology of its parent company, LS Cable & System.

It supplies bus ducts to US companies and AI cloud service providers, as well as low-voltage cables for power plants. Its US subsidiary is expanding supplies of medium-voltage cables connecting substations with AI data-center complexes.

“Demand for construction efficiency is growing at large industrial facilities, including AI data centers, semiconductor plants and battery factories,” Gaon Cable CEO Jung Hyun said.

“We will expand globally with specialized distribution products, including aluminum-clad flexible cables, low-friction cables and cable bus systems.”
