South Korea has become the fourth nation to establish a formal security partnership in artificial intelligence (AI) with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, Yonhap reports.
Under a newly signed memorandum of understanding, the country’s AI Safety Institute (AISI) will collaborate with OpenAI to design a global framework for evaluating AI security. The partnership will focus on exchanging technical expertise and developing an assessment system tailored to the Korean language and social context.
OpenAI has previously forged similar agreements with AI safety organizations in the United State, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
By joining this network, South Korea aims to strengthen its role in shaping international standards for identifying and mitigating risks associated with advanced AI systems.
The ministry emphasized that the agreement will enhance South Korea’s position in global cooperation on AI risk verification and safety protocols. AISI and OpenAI are expected to convene a working-level meeting soon to finalize the details of the collaboration.
Earlier, it was reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had delayed his trip to South Korea.
