Fortran MCP – Local MCP server providing curated Fortran documentation for AI-assisted development Developer Minh Dao released Fortran MCP, an open-source MIT-licensed local Model Context Protocol server that gives AI coding assistants a curated Fortran documentation corpus covering the Fortran Package Manager, Fortran Standard Library, GNU Fortran compiler manual, CMake, OpenMP examples, GNU Make, NumPy F2PY, Fypp, Open MPI, Fortitude, Codee Open Catalog, old programming idioms, the PRIMA modernization case study and Beliavsky's fpm-compatible project list. The server supports lexical, semantic and hybrid search, with documentation sources split into chunks and converted into vector embeddings for semantic matching, and results link back to the original sources. Fortran MCP runs locally with MCP-compatible clients such as Claude Code and Codex, and Minh Dao notes that AI clients do not always invoke MCP tools automatically, so users should explicitly ask their assistant to use the server for documentation-grounded answers. I’ve been working on Fortran MCP https://github.com/minhqdao/fortran-mcp , a local MCP server that provides a curated collection of documentation, guides, and technical references for Fortran development. It lets AI coding assistants search documentation on Fortran language features, compiler behavior, build systems, and related tools. It supports lexical search matching words , semantic search matching meaning , and hybrid search combining both . For the semantic search, the documentation sources were split into chunks and converted into vector embeddings. Results link back to the original sources. The current collection includes: Fortran Package Manager documentation https://fpm.fortran-lang.org/ Fortran Standard Library documentation https://stdlib.fortran-lang.org/ GNU Fortran Compiler manual https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gfortran/ CMake documentation for Fortran projects https://cmake.org/cmake/help/latest/ Fortran-lang guides and references: OpenMP Fortran examples https://github.com/OpenMP/Examples GNU Make manual https://www.gnu.org/software/make/manual/ NumPy F2PY documentation https://numpy.org/doc/stable/f2py/ Fypp documentation https://fypp.readthedocs.io/ Open MPI Fortran routine reference https://docs.open-mpi.org/en/v5.0.10/man-openmpi/man3/ Fortitude linter documentation https://fortitude.readthedocs.io/ Codee Open Catalog https://github.com/codee-com/open-catalog — selected Fortran safety and performance guidelines Old programming idioms explained https://github.com/arjenmarkus/old-programming-idioms PRIMA modernization case study https://github.com/libprima/prima — behavior-preserving Fortran modernization Beliavsky’s list of fpm-compatible Fortran projects https://github.com/Beliavsky/Fortran-packages-list The server runs locally and works with MCP-compatible clients such as Claude Code and Codex. Tip: AI clients don’t always use MCP tools automatically. If you want answers grounded in Fortran MCP’s documentation, explicitly ask your assistant to use the Fortran MCP server. The project is open source under the MIT license. If you spot gaps in the current coverage or know of other useful Fortran resources, let me know and I’d be happy to look into adding them.
