*Fluidstack was a name almost nobody outside the AI infrastructure world knew a year ago. Now it's being valued at up to $18 billion.*

In December 2025, the London-founded startup closed roughly $700 million in fresh capital at a $7.5 billion valuation, according to Bloomberg. That was already a jump. Then, in April 2026, TechCrunch reported Fluidstack was back at the table. This time it wanted $1 billion. The target valuation: $18 billion, more than double where the company stood four months earlier. Jane Street and the Situational Awareness fund, founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, were reportedly in talks to co-lead, with Morgan Stanley advising.

You don't triple a valuation that fast by accident. Fluidstack's pitch to investors is speed. It says it can stand up custom AI data centers faster than the hyperscalers, and it has the contracts to back that up.

The turning point came in November 2025. Anthropic announced it would spend $50 billion building out US infrastructure, starting with Fluidstack sites in Texas and New York, according to CNBC. The project is expected to create about 800 permanent jobs. Add in more than 2,000 construction roles. The first facilities are slated to come online this year, custom built around Anthropic's own workloads. One contract turned a company most investors had never heard of into the anchor tenant of one of the largest AI infrastructure bets in the country.

The momentum hasn't slowed since. In June, Fluidstack struck a hosting arrangement with bitcoin miner TeraWulf worth $6.7 billion in contracted revenue. The term: 10 years. Google backstopped part of the obligation. Then on July 6, Cipher Mining expanded its own hosting deal with Fluidstack by 56 megawatts at the Barber Lake site in Colorado City, Texas, adding about $830 million in contracted revenue over the initial term, according to Blockspace Media. Google's total backstop of Fluidstack's obligations across these deals now sits at $1.73 billion.

Notice what's actually happening. Fluidstack isn't raising money and hoping the demand shows up later. It signs the power and hosting contracts first. Then it uses those contracts to justify the next valuation jump.

## Racing hyperscalers on speed, not size

That's the real bet here. TSMC is pouring tens of billions into its Arizona fabs. IREN has locked in multibillion-dollar compute agreements with Microsoft and Nvidia. BlackRock helped bankroll the sprawling El Paso data center project. Those firms operate on balance sheets measured in the hundreds of billions. Fluidstack cannot out-spend any of them, and it isn't trying to. What it can do is move faster. A hyperscaler often spends 18 months on permitting and design before anyone breaks ground. Fluidstack has built its reputation on skipping that runway. That speed is exactly why Anthropic picked it as a build partner instead of developing sites on its own.

Founded in 2017 by Gary Wu, Cesar Maklary and a handful of co-founders, Fluidstack started as a GPU marketplace. It later pivoted into a full-stack cloud provider serving clients like Meta, Midjourney and Mistral. It's an unglamorous history for a company now chasing an $18 billion price tag. But it's also why Fluidstack already had the operational muscle to move fast once Anthropic came calling.

Whether Fluidstack can grow into that valuation is still an open question. Neoclouds live and die on utilization. If the GPUs sit idle, contracted revenue numbers stop mattering fast. For now, every deal it signs, from TeraWulf to Cipher Mining to Anthropic itself, does double duty. It pays the bills. And it's the evidence Jane Street and Situational Awareness are using to justify a valuation more than twice what Fluidstack was worth in December.
