Anthropic has donated Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation, following its earlier donation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Anthropic says more than 70 platforms already support the standard, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code.
Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies will maintain it as individuals. The donation includes the name, logo, GitHub organization, and agentskills.io domain.
The pattern looks familiar: build something useful, publish an open standard, gain adoption, then move it to neutral governance. Anthropic gives up sole control while the conventions it introduced spread across competing products.
MCP was the first round. Skills makes two.
