Fetch.ai’s Innovation Lab has been quietly rolling out custom AI agents across universities in the US and UK, targeting one of the most universally chaotic human experiences: being a new college student trying to figure out where things are.

The deployments span multiple campuses, with agents designed to help students navigate their surroundings and discover local events.

## What the agents actually do

At San José State University, Fetch.ai built what it calls “Welcome Week AI Agents.” These are autonomous tools meant to help incoming students explore events hosted by SJSU’s International Student Organization and connect with alumni.

Over at California State University, Long Beach, a different flavor of agent was deployed: a “Scavenger Hunt” bot designed to gamify campus navigation. The idea was to get students physically moving around campus while engaging with the AI system, turning the usual “wander around lost for a week” experience into something more structured.

Both agents were built using Fetch.ai’s own technical stack, including its uAgents framework, the Agentverse platform, and ASI:One. These tools let developers create autonomous agents that can operate independently, communicate with other agents, and execute tasks without constant human oversight.

The university list doesn’t stop at SJSU and CSULB. Fetch.ai’s Innovation Lab has been running educational outreach, including hackathons, workshops, and guest lectures, at a roster of institutions that includes UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, and Stanford in the US. On the UK side, Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge round out the partnerships.

## The broader education strategy

These campus agents are part of a larger strategy that Fetch.ai is planning to ramp up significantly between 2025 and 2026. The company isn’t just dropping bots onto campuses and walking away. It’s embedding itself in the academic ecosystem through hands-on technical workshops where students and faculty can build with the same tools powering these agents.

The financial commitment is real, too. Fetch.ai awarded $100,000 to UCLA specifically to enhance AI research capabilities on campus.

For Fetch.ai, the university push has an additional layer of strategic logic. The project originated in the crypto and decentralized AI space, where adoption has historically been bottlenecked by complexity. By putting tools into the hands of computer science students at top-tier schools, the company is building a pipeline of developers who understand autonomous agent architecture before they even hit the job market.

## From decentralized protocol to practical tooling

The uAgents framework, which underpins these campus deployments, is open-source and designed to let anyone build autonomous agents. Agentverse serves as a hosting and discovery platform for those agents. ASI:One provides the underlying AI capabilities.

The absence of any explicit token or crypto integration in these university deployments is notable. Fetch.ai’s FET token (now part of the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance alongside SingularityNET and Ocean Protocol) powers the project’s broader network, but these campus agents appear to be running as straightforward AI tools without blockchain components.
