German Klarian Hinojosa, aka Felipe Gomez Navarrete, was charged with bank burglary in the June 1 break-in that targeted the San Francisco Federal Credit Union on Ocean Avenue. Police say Hinojosa and two others were able to get into the business and saw through the back of an ATM, but police tracked down their getaway car because some of the cash contained a secret GPS device.
Hinojosa and others led police on a five-mile chase that ended off of Interstate 280, where the burglars abandoned their getaway car and ran in different directions, according to the criminal complaint. Authorities say Hinojosa, the suspected driver, was arrested and the two passengers escaped.
Hinojosa had a fake Argentinian ID card when he was arrested, the complaint says. Police say burglary tools were recovered from the car and were left behind in the credit union’s break room.
The group allegedly spray painted over surveillance cameras and used a grinding tool and blow torch to break into the ATM. Hinojosa has been detained while the case is pending after prosecutors argued he’s a flight risk with no ties to the Bay Area. He is due to appear in court later this week.
