The Portuguese defender's plummeting price tag from €15M to under €10M offers a case study in how illiquid markets reprice assets, a dynamic crypto traders know all too well.
João Cancelo is about to become FC Barcelona’s latest bargain bin acquisition. The 32-year-old Portuguese full-back, currently on loan from Saudi club Al-Hilal, is set to sign a permanent two-year deal for under €10M, down from an initial asking price of €15M.
Cancelo joined Al-Hilal from Manchester City in August 2024 on a contract reportedly worth around €16M per season, running through June 2027. Barcelona brought him in on loan in January 2026 for the remainder of the season. Now both sides are working toward making the arrangement permanent, with super-agent Jorge Mendes facilitating negotiations between the clubs.
Al-Hilal initially wanted €15M. They’ve since softened, with reports indicating a willingness to let Cancelo go for potentially under €10M. Meanwhile, the player himself has signaled he’d accept a salary between €4M and €5M gross per season plus bonuses. That’s roughly a 70% pay cut from his Saudi wages.
The €8M market valuation that various football data platforms assign to Cancelo represents the baseline against which the under €10M clearing price is being negotiated bilaterally between motivated parties.
Barcelona’s interest in sub-€10M deals isn’t random frugality. The club has been operating under significant financial pressure for years, famously pulling various “economic levers” to stay competitive while managing enormous debt. Coach Hansi Flick needs defensive reinforcements, but the checkbook isn’t exactly overflowing.
Cancelo is 32. Barcelona is betting that two years of solid defensive contributions at a low acquisition cost and reduced wages represents positive expected value.
