FamilyTech Translator: Finally, a Way to Explain What I Actually Do.

A developer built FamilyTech Translator, an AI-powered tool that explains technical concepts in terms tailored to the specific person receiving the explanation, such as describing Kubernetes through workers and work distribution for a tailor rather than through containers and pods. The app, built with React, TypeScript, a Spring Boot REST API, PostgreSQL, and a local open-weight model, stores context about each listener so the same concept yields different explanations for different people, and asks users to explain the concept back to confirm understanding.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

My family knows I work in software.

But if I say:

"I'm working with Spring Boot, REST APIs, PostgreSQL, React, and microservices."

…I get the classic response:

"Okay, but what do you actually do?"

That's the problem I wanted to solve.

So I built FamilyTech Translator — a small AI-powered tool that translates technical concepts into explanations based on the actual person you're talking to.

Instead of asking:

"Explain Kubernetes simply."

you can say:

"Explain Kubernetes to my grandfather, who is a tailor and also does farm work."

The AI doesn't just simplify the definition.

It tries to explain the concept through something that person already understands.

For example, Kubernetes can be explained through workers, work distribution, backup arrangements, and managing multiple tasks — rather than immediately throwing containers, pods, deployments, and clusters at someone.

The app remembers the context of the person you're explaining something to:

So the same concept can receive completely different explanations for different people.

A software engineer doesn't need another generic "ELI5" tool.

I wanted something closer to:

"Explain it like this person would understand it."

The basic flow is:

The last part is important.

Understanding shouldn't just mean:

"I read the explanation."

It should mean:

"I can explain it back."
