Claude Fable 5 is Anthropic's newest flagship and, in our testing and the independent benchmarks, the strongest model in the current lineup for polished front-end work. It is selectable in Playcode's AI website builder. It is also the most expensive model we offer - so this post is about when that premium is worth paying.
Why it's the quality pick #
Claude models have long produced the most tasteful, well-structured front-end code of any AI family, and Fable 5 is the current apex of that line. On the independent Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index it comes out on top of this cohort - ahead of even GPT-5.6 Sol - and it wins SWE-Bench Pro, a hard real-world coding benchmark, at around 80%, beating the newest models from OpenAI and xAI.
The most convincing endorsement comes from a competitor's camp. Simon Willison, who had early access to OpenAI's new GPT-5.6 Sol, wrote that it is "definitely very competent, though so far it hasn't struck me as better than Fable at the kind of complex coding tasks" he runs on Anthropic's model. When the reviewer testing the rival product still reaches for Fable on the hard stuff, that tells you something.
What it costs #
Fable 5 is priced at $10 per 1M input tokens and $50 per 1M output tokens - exactly double Claude Opus 4.8's $5 / $25. It is the top of the market, and it spends tokens generously: the same independent tests show Fable 5 using far more tokens per task than the efficiency-focused models like Grok 4.5. Great output, heavier bill.

When Fable 5 is worth it #
Design-critical pages. A hero section, a marketing site, a portfolio, a landing page for a paying client - anywhere the visual result is the product.Complex, real applications. When the logic is genuinely hard and you want the model that leads the toughest coding benchmarks.The final polish pass. Draft cheaply on a fast model, then switch to Fable 5 for the finishing work where quality matters most.
Where it isn't the answer #
Fable 5 is overkill for quick edits, simple pages, or high-volume drafting - you will spend premium credits for output a cheaper model would have nailed. For those, GPT-5.6 Terra or Luna, or Grok 4.5, are the smarter economic choice. Fable also inherits the usual flagship trade-offs: it is slower than the light models, and like every big model it can occasionally over-engineer a simple request. One quirk worth noting: it declines advanced-biology questions by design, which almost never matters for web building but is good to know.
The honest way to use it #
Treat Fable 5 as your "spare no expense" model, not your default. Build and iterate on a cheaper model, and bring in Fable 5 for the pages and problems where the result really has to be excellent.
