Expensify integrates Claude AI from Anthropic for small businesses

Expensify rolled out a Model Context Protocol server that connects AI assistants such as Anthropic's Claude directly to users' expense data, targeting its approximately 15 million members globally. The integration was spotlighted on September 15 as part of Anthropic's launch of Claude for Small Business, which debuted with 27 integrations and 43 workflows, and the Expensify MCP server first launched on June 8 with OAuth 2.1 authentication. Expensify CEO David Barrett framed the move as inevitable, arguing that integration with AI agents will become table stakes for business tools.

The expense management platform's new MCP server lets AI assistants query spending data through natural language, targeting its 15 million users globally.

Expensify just made it possible to ask your AI assistant what you spent on coffee last quarter, and actually get an answer. The Nasdaq-listed expense management company has rolled out a Model Context Protocol server that connects AI tools like Anthropic’s Claude directly to users’ financial data, turning expense tracking from a spreadsheet chore into a conversation.

The integration was spotlighted on September 15 as part of Anthropic’s launch of Claude for Small Business, which debuted with 27 integrations and 43 workflows aimed squarely at small and medium-sized businesses. Expensify landed a prominent spot in that lineup.

How the integration actually works #

The Expensify MCP server, which first launched on June 8, creates a secure bridge between AI assistants and a user’s Expensify account. Claude can retrieve and analyze expense data, but it cannot approve reports, modify settings, or make any changes within the platform.

Authentication runs through OAuth 2.1, the current standard for secure third-party access. Users need a validated Expensify account and a compatible Claude subscription to get started. Setup guides have been available since August.

The practical upside is that small business owners can now ask questions in plain English instead of wrestling with CSV exports or building custom scripts. Queries like “What did I spend on travel last month?” or “Summarize my team’s spend by category for the last quarter” get processed directly against live Expensify data.

It also supports more complex workflows, including month-end book closing that pulls directly from Expensify records.

Why Expensify is betting on conversational finance #

Expensify CEO David Barrett has framed this move as inevitable rather than innovative. His argument: software is trending toward conversational interfaces, and integration with AI agents will become table stakes for any business tool that wants to stay relevant.

Expensify’s user base of approximately 15 million members globally gives it significant scale to test this thesis.

The MCP server isn’t limited to Claude, either. It’s designed to work with multiple AI assistants, including ChatGPT and Cursor, using a standardized search tool.

The competitive landscape for AI-powered expense management #

Expensify’s move comes at a time when the expense management sector is rapidly being reshaped by automation. Competitors like Brex, Ramp, and SAP Concur have all been layering AI features into their platforms, from automated receipt scanning to predictive budget alerts.

What differentiates the MCP approach is its openness. Rather than building a proprietary chatbot within the Expensify app, the company is letting external AI assistants access its data through a standardized protocol.

Anthropic’s Claude for Small Business launch, with its 43 pre-built workflows, signals that the AI industry sees SMBs as the next major growth segment. For Expensify as a public company trading under the ticker EXFY, the integration could serve as a meaningful driver of user engagement and retention.
