For years, buying a laptop meant comparing processors, RAM, storage and display specifications before deciding which machine offered the best deal. But that checklist may be becoming less important. As smartphones have become faster, more efficient and instantly accessible, consumers are beginning to expect laptops to behave in much the same way. In an exclusive conversation with Mashable India , Saurabh Arora, Director Business Development, Mobile, Compute and XR Business at Qualcomm /tech/110283/qualcomm-just-launched-a-chip-that-could-make-windows-laptops-cheaper-than-ever , explained how expectations around battery life, AI, connectivity and portability are reshaping PCs, and why the next laptop upgrade could be driven more by the overall experience than numbers on a specification sheet. Laptop buyers may stop obsessing over specifications According to Arora, people increasingly expect their laptops to offer the qualities they have become accustomed to on smartphones: instant wake, all-day battery life, constant connectivity and cool, quiet operation. That is also changing how people evaluate a new machine. “The era of selling a laptop on CPU clock speeds and RAM numbers is behind us,” he said. Instead of worrying about whether a processor has 12 or 16 cores, buyers are more likely to care about whether their laptop wakes instantly, lasts through the day or lets them join a Teams call from anywhere. Arora said Qualcomm’s compute concept evaluation research similarly found consumers responding more strongly to experiential descriptions such as “always ready to go”, “longest battery life” and “lightweight” than raw benchmark figures. Battery life is becoming a performance metric Battery life is perhaps the clearest example of this shift. Arora believes the PC industry spent years prioritising outright performance over power efficiency, while the arrival of ARM-based compute platforms in premium Windows notebooks has put mobility and efficiency much higher on the agenda. Qualcomm claims its Snapdragon X Series can deliver more than 20 hours of real-world battery life without sacrificing performance. “Consumers who've used our devices say they no longer carry a charger, and that's when you know you've changed the paradigm,” Arora said. He also pointed to Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture as an important part of making thin-and-light machines more powerful, arguing that portability and performance no longer necessarily have to come at the expense of each other. AI could become the next big reason to buy a laptop The bigger change, however, could come from AI. Arora believes AI will be “the single biggest driver of the next upgrade cycle”, with computing moving from a smartphone-centric world towards what he describes as an “agent-centric” one. Unlike an SSD that primarily makes a machine faster or a better display that improves what users see, on-device AI could change what the laptop actually does for them. Real-time transcription, AI-accelerated noise cancellation, intelligent background management and privacy-focused on-device processing are among the experiences he expects to become more important. Qualcomm is positioning its 45-TOPS NPU around these Copilot+ AI experiences, with the larger goal of making AI something users interact with throughout their everyday workflows rather than as a standalone feature. Work, personal use and even laptop shopping could start converging The way we use, and shop for, laptops could consequently change as well. Arora said the distinction between a “work laptop” and a “personal device” is already fading, with enterprise users expecting one machine to handle Zoom and Teams calls, creative work, entertainment and personal productivity. India could be an especially interesting market for this transition. While Indian consumers remain deeply value-conscious, Arora believes the definition of value itself is evolving, particularly among younger urban buyers. Instead of simply asking what specifications they get for the money, consumers are increasingly asking, “what can this device do for me?” Smartphone habits have already normalised instant responsiveness, long battery life and constant connectivity, and Qualcomm expects AI to eventually become another upgrade trigger, shifting the decision from replacing a broken laptop to actively wanting a new AI-powered experience. The premium laptop of the future may be the one you barely notice Three to five years from now, Arora expects specifications such as screen resolution and storage capacity to increasingly become table stakes for premium laptops. The bigger differentiators could instead be the quality of on-device AI, battery endurance and how seamlessly a laptop communicates with a user’s phone, earbuds, watch and even car, an idea Qualcomm calls the “Ecosystem of You”. The vision is of a laptop that is personalised, context-aware, constantly connected and efficient enough to fit into everyday life without demanding much attention. If that direction holds, the next laptop battle may not be about who can put the biggest numbers on a spec sheet, but who can make the PC feel as effortless and indispensable as the smartphone already does.
