Europe’s Physical AI bet moves from the lab to industrial scale Fifteen autonomous robots entered the European Parliament on September 2 for the euROBIN Final Event hosted by MEP Axel Voss, showcasing Europe's Physical AI ambitions. euROBIN, the European Network of Excellence in Robotics funded through Horizon Europe, has brought together 31 organisations across 14 countries and 26 European cities. Fifteen robots capable of navigating autonomously, manipulating objects, maintaining balance and assisting people with everyday tasks entered the European Parliament last week. More than a technology showcase , the euROBIN Final Event, hosted on September 2 by MEP Axel Voss, offered a snapshot of Europe’s ambitions in a field where artificial intelligence and robotics are increasingly converging. At the centre of that shift is Physical AI: systems in which artificial intelligence moves beyond purely digital environments, allowing machines to perceive, learn, reason and act in the physical world. Its development could open applications across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and services. - For Europe, however, it also raises an industrial question: how to turn scientific expertise and advanced technologies into products, companies and production capacity able to operate at global scale. From research strength to industrial scale. That transition was one of the main themes of the discussion in Brussels between researchers, companies and policymakers. - Europe starts from a significant base. euROBIN, the European Network of Excellence in Robotics funded through Horizon Europe, has brought together 31 organisations across 14 countries and 26 European cities, creating a network through which knowledge, technologies and robotic capabilities can be shared. - But the acceleration of AI is increasing competitive pressure as the United States and China move in the same technological space. Europe’s research capabilities will increasingly need to be matched by investment, commercialisation, manufacturing capacity and scale-up. According to euROBIN ’s account of the event, Voss stressed the importance of ensuring that technologies developed in Europe can also be commercialised and scaled in Europe. - The demonstrations at the Parliament suggested that parts of that transition are already taking shape. Among the companies present was Generative Bionics, an Italian company focused on Physical AI and humanoid robotics, which brought its GENE technology to Brussels for live demonstrations throughout the event. For Daniele Pucci , CEO of Generative Bionics, the ambition is to develop technologies designed in Europe that can scale globally. - “Europe needs to act now to build technological sovereignty around solutions that are sustainable, certified, safe, and trustworthy,” Pucci said after the event. Building a European robotics ecosystem. The picture extends beyond humanoid platforms themselves. - PAL Robotics is developing bipedal and humanoid platforms for applications including logistics and healthcare, while Synapticon specialises in hardware components such as smart actuators, motion control and integrated drive systems. Inria contributed to the technical preparation and demonstrations around the event, while BruBotics at VUB provided a testing environment for several humanoid robots ahead of their move to the European Parliament. - It is this combination of research, components, software, testing and commercial platforms that makes Physical AI more than a contest over the performance of individual robots. The ability to build an ecosystem around those technologies — and move them from laboratories into the market — could help determine how effectively European players translate technological capabilities into market-ready systems as the sector develops. - The issue is therefore less whether Europe possesses robotics expertise than how effectively that expertise can be connected to industrial capacity. The euROBIN event offered evidence of a research and technological base already in place. The next stage will depend increasingly on the ability to translate that base into scale. What kind of Physical AI does Europe want?. Yet the European debate is not only about how quickly robotics can scale. It is also about the kind of artificial intelligence that should be embedded in machines. - Commenting on the euROBIN event on LinkedIn, Vittorio Colaprice, Policy Officer at the European Artificial Intelligence Office within DG CNECT, recalled a line by author Joanna Maciejewska: “I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so I can do art and writing — not the opposite.” - For Colaprice, the demonstrations in Brussels pointed towards robots designed to augment human capabilities rather than replace them: taking over repetitive, dangerous or tedious tasks while leaving people more space for creativity, care, strategy and decision-making. - Colaprice also referred to Europe’s discussion of an AI-based Robotics Act, arguing that the priority should be AI that frees up time, protects workers and strengthens human creativity. - That adds another dimension to Europe’s Physical AI ambitions. The challenge is not simply to reproduce a robotics race taking place elsewhere, but to combine competitiveness, scale and technological sovereignty with systems designed to be safe, trustworthy and human-centric. The next test. Bringing 15 AI-powered robots into the European Parliament demonstrated that Europe already possesses many of the ingredients needed to play a leading role in the next generation of robotics. - The next question is how quickly research, industry, investment and policy can move together as Physical AI develops into an increasingly strategic industrial field. - For Europe, scientific strength provides a strong starting point.
