# Equinix builds inference exchange with Nvidia and Together AI for Q1 2027 launch

The data center giant is turning its global interconnection network into a distributed AI inference layer, partnering with Nvidia and Together AI to serve enterprise workloads closer to where they actually run.

Equinix, the company that quietly operates 281 data centers across 77 metros worldwide, just announced its most ambitious AI play yet. The Equinix Inference Exchange, unveiled on September 2, combines Nvidia’s enterprise reference architectures with Together AI’s inference platform to create what amounts to a global marketplace for running AI models at the edge of enterprise networks.

The target launch is Q1 2027.

## What the inference exchange actually does

Equinix’s pitch is straightforward: use its existing global data center footprint and its interconnection service, Equinix Fabric, to let enterprises run inference workloads close to their data and end users. Together AI brings support for more than 200 open-source models to the table, giving enterprises a broad menu of options without being locked into a single vendor’s proprietary stack. Nvidia contributes its validated Enterprise Reference Architectures, essentially pre-tested hardware and software configurations that reduce the guesswork in setting up inference environments.

The combination means an enterprise in Frankfurt could theoretically spin up an inference workload on open-source models using Nvidia-validated infrastructure, connected via Equinix Fabric to its existing cloud providers, without shipping data halfway around the world first.

## Why Equinix is making this move now

This follows earlier initiatives including Equinix’s AI Factory program and collaborations with companies like Cisco. The pattern is clear: Equinix is systematically layering AI-specific capabilities on top of its existing data center and interconnection assets.

Equinix CEO Adaire Fox-Martin framed the announcement around the company’s long track record, pointing to its history of providing reliable infrastructure and its role as a “trusted exchange.” Nvidia’s VP Raj Mirpuri described the potential to transform Equinix’s interconnection platform into a “global fabric for AI inference,” and highlighted accelerated compute as a strategic asset class.

## The competitive landscape and what to watch

What Equinix brings that most competitors don’t is neutrality. Its data centers are designed to connect to multiple clouds and networks simultaneously. An inference exchange that works across cloud providers, rather than within a single one, addresses a real architectural headache for enterprises running hybrid or multi-cloud strategies.

By building on a platform that supports more than 200 open-source models, Equinix is implicitly betting that the future of enterprise AI inference won’t be dominated by a handful of proprietary models from OpenAI or Anthropic.

Equinix’s 281 data centers across 77 metros represent one of the largest potential footprints for distributed deployment, and the partnerships with Nvidia and Together AI add technical credibility to the offering.
