Tesla employees now face a $200 weekly limit on third-party AI tools while Musk pushes his own xAI platform internally
Elon Musk has told Tesla employees to start using Grok 4.5 for their AI-related work, marking a clear push to embed his own xAI technology deep into Tesla’s daily operations. The directive, issued on July 10, came just days after Tesla quietly rolled out a new policy capping what employees can spend on outside AI tools.
Starting July 6, Tesla implemented a spending cap of $200 per week per employee on third-party AI tools. Products from xAI, specifically Grok and Composer, are exempt from that limit. Musk has pointed to Grok 4.5’s cost-effectiveness compared to competing models as the rationale. The model is currently in private beta at both Tesla and SpaceX, with Musk noting its competitiveness specifically in engineering tasks.
Internal reports suggest Tesla employees had been gravitating toward Anthropic’s Claude for their AI workflows. Tesla’s $2 billion stake in xAI, made in January, creates an alignment of incentives that’s hard to ignore.
The internal adoption push is only one piece of a larger Grok integration strategy at Tesla. The company has been working on embedding Grok into its vehicles through a “Hey Grok” voice assistant feature, part of software updates rolling out across 2025 and 2026. Tesla is also planning to integrate Grok with its Full Self-Driving system through voice controls expected in fall 2026.
There’s also the governance angle that Wall Street has been increasingly vocal about. Musk directing Tesla resources toward a company he separately owns and controls raises conflict-of-interest questions that institutional investors have flagged before. The January investment in xAI already drew scrutiny. A company-wide mandate to use xAI products adds another layer to that conversation.
