Elon Musk has identified China as the strongest competitor facing the United States in artificial intelligence. The remark quickly circulated among technology and policy watchers.

For context, Musk's latest comment builds on earlier statements regarding the global AI race. He has previously predicted that China could eventually surpass the rest of the world in AI computing capacity, largely because of its ability to rapidly expand electricity generation.

Electricity and advanced chips remain two of the biggest constraints on AI development, Musk has argued, pointing out that China holds a significant advantage in electricity-generation capacity. ## Bitcoin Miners Sign Multi-Billion-Dollar Agreements

The scale of recent infrastructure deals illustrates how scarce, grid-connected power has become one of the most valuable resources in the AI buildout. In December 2025, Hut 8 signed a 15-year, $7 billion (£5.2 billion) lease with cloud provider Fluidstack for 245 MW of capacity at its River

Bend campus in Louisiana, as part of a broader infrastructure partnership involving Anthropic. Google is providing a financial backstop for Fluidstack's obligations under the base lease.

In July 2026, TeraWulf signed a 20-year lease with Anthropic expected to generate roughly $19 billion (£14.1 billion) in contracted revenue over its initial term. The agreement covers a purpose-built AI infrastructure campus in Hawesville, Kentucky, with approximately 401 MW of critical IT capacity expected when fully developed.

At the time of the announcement, the contract value exceeded TeraWulf's roughly $12 billion (£8.9 billion) market value, highlighting the scale of its transition from Bitcoin mining towards AI infrastructure.

Riot Platforms followed in August with a 20-year agreement worth approximately $9.1 billion (£6.8 billion) covering 191 MW of computing capacity at its Rockdale, Texas, campus.

Riot initially described the customer only as a 'leading frontier AI lab,' while subsequent reporting identified it as Anthropic. The agreement includes extension options that could increase its potential value to $16.1 billion (£12 billion).

The competition with China therefore extends beyond software into chips, electricity and physical data-centre infrastructure. As AI laboratories race to secure enormous amounts of computing capacity, Musk's warning highlights a broader strategic question.

It is whether America's lead in frontier models can be sustained if China continues expanding the energy and industrial infrastructure needed to power AI at scale.
