AI-driven data center demand is pushing American electricity consumption past a 15-year plateau, with commercial use set to surpass residential for the first time

The US is about to use more electricity than it ever has. The Energy Information Administration’s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released July 7, projects power consumption will set records in both 2026 and 2027, driven largely by the insatiable energy appetite of AI data centers.

Total US electricity consumption is expected to hit 4,269 billion kWh this year, up from 4,195 billion kWh in 2025. Next year, it climbs again to 4,399 billion kWh. For context, American power demand was essentially flat for about 15 years before this recent surge, so a back-to-back record-setting stretch is genuinely unusual.

The AI factor and a historic crossover #

Commercial electricity sales are forecast to reach 1,550 billion kWh in 2026, while residential consumption is actually expected to dip slightly to 1,508 billion kWh. That would mark the first time commercial demand has exceeded residential demand in the US.

The EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook 2026, published back in April, laid the groundwork for these projections. That longer-term report flagged data-center server energy use as the single biggest factor behind the resurgence in electricity growth. It pegged average annual growth in US electricity consumption between 0.9% and 1.6% through 2050.

Over the past five years, national electricity demand has grown at an average annual rate of 2.1%, which is well above even the upper bound of the long-term forecast.

Where the power comes from #

Renewable energy’s share of US power generation is projected to rise from about 24% in 2025 to 27% in 2027. Coal, meanwhile, continues its long decline, dropping from 17% of generation to 15% over the same period.

What this means for energy markets and beyond #

The EIA’s data also noted that both AI and cryptocurrency operations contribute to data-center energy demand, though AI is clearly the dominant driver of the current growth trajectory.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation has already flagged multiple regions as facing elevated risk of power shortfalls during extreme weather events.
