Trinity Audioplayer ready...OAKLAND — A suspected drunken driver has been charged in the November 2025 death of a woman struck and killed on an Oakland freeway, where she had stopped to help another person involved in an earlier crash, according to authorities and court records.

The suspect, Gianni Destiny Robinson, 22, of Oakland, was charged Tuesday with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. The exact amount was not specified in court documents.

She had previously made bail and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.

Killed instantly in the Nov. 29, 2025 collision on northbound Interstate 880 south of Fifth Avenue was Anmol-Kiram Kaur Bassi, of Hayward, who had just turned 31 nine days earlier.

According to the California Highway Patrol and court records, Bassi, who had been driving a white Lexus, had stopped to assist another motorist who had been involved in an earlier solo-vehicle crash. While she was standing outside her vehicle she was struck by a white Chevrolet driven by Robinson, who had been going an estimated 70 mph, the CHP said.

Bassi was pronounced dead at the scene. Robinson and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to a hospital.

A CHP officer who contacted Robinson at the hospital “immediately detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath and person” and said that she also had red and watery eyes and that her “speech was slow and slurred,” the documents say.

She allegedly admitted being involved in the collision but told the CHP at the hospital she had not consumed any alcohol before the crash, the records say.

She was placed under arrest at the hospital and later transported to Santa Rita Jail.

According to an online obituary, Bassi was “a beloved daughter, sister and who touched the lives of many with her kindness and generosity. Anmol-Kiran’s love, compassion, and dedication to her family will forever be remembered and celebrated. A woman of great integrity and warmth, Anmol-Kiran’s presence brought joy and comfort to those around her.

“Her life was marked by unwavering dedication to her family and her steadfast faith. Her wisdom, laughter, and gentle spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew her.”
