The tool offers six virtual rotors, up to three simultaneous drawing arms, six scale options, customizable notes, six synth presets, and adjustable quantization and BPM, though its sound engine is prone to clipping and lacks MIDI output.", "body_md": "I remember having a [Spirograph](/2014/5/26/5752028/turntable-with-robotic-arms-draws-beautiful-spirographs) as a kid and being obsessed with it. Its geometric patterns are hypnotic and gorgeous. I also love [generative music](/report/879819/laurie-spiegel-is-celebrating-40-of-music-mouse-with-a-modern-revival) composition. So bringing those two things together in a browser tab, I’m hooked. [Musical Spirograph](https://musical.toys/toys/spirograph/) is a relatively simple concept. A set of points dash around the screen according to mathematical equations, generating hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. Those points pass through a series of concentric rings which trigger specific notes.\n\n# Doodle generative compositions in your browser with Musical Spirograph\n\nIt’s soothing, hypnotic, and fun to play with.\n\nIt’s soothing, hypnotic, and fun to play with.\n\nHonestly, that alone is fun enough, but you can customize it quite a bit. There are six different virtual rotors to pick from, you can have up to three arms drawing simultaneously, and there are a bunch of other parameters to tweak the pattern. Then there are six different scale options, or you can completely customize the notes, and there are six different synth presets. Plus you can change the quantization and BPM, or even expand the number of rings out to two octaves.\n\nSure, the sound engine isn’t great, and it’s prone to clipping and artifacts. And I really wish there was a way to get MIDI out of it to control other instruments. But it’s still a ton of fun to get lost in for a while.\n\n**Follow topics and authors** from this story to see more like this in your personalized homepage feed and to receive email updates.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/doodle-generative-compositions-in-your-browser-with-musical-spirograph", "canonical_source": "https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/983322/musical-spirograph-generative-composition", "published_at": "2026-08-22 17:00:00+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-08-22 17:13:03.481863+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["generative-ai", "ai-tools"], "entities": ["Musical Spirograph"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/doodle-generative-compositions-in-your-browser-with-musical-spirograph", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/doodle-generative-compositions-in-your-browser-with-musical-spirograph.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/doodle-generative-compositions-in-your-browser-with-musical-spirograph.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/doodle-generative-compositions-in-your-browser-with-musical-spirograph.jsonld"}}
