The piece warns against creating a reactive or apathetic civilization and advocates for a proactive one where AI sharpens decision-making skills.", "body_md": "Turns out everyone wants to remove every other person who's a bottleneck and make things more efficient with AI.\n\nI'm like... how can that be the primary goal?\n\nIf you care about people, if you care about civilization, and you want things to go well, shouldn't we have a better answer than simply \"remove the bottleneck\"?\n\nI believe this \"remove the bottleneck\" movement, the way it's currently being pursued, is one of the worst ideas the AI industry has orchestrated.\n\nWhy?\n\nBecause bottlenecks aren't just inefficiencies. They're often where human judgment is formed.\n\nThink about how expertise actually develops.\n\nA junior developer works, learns, and becomes a senior.\n\nThen they lead a team, become an engineering manager, and eventually a CTO.\n\nThen they help the CEO execute new ideas in the market.\n\nEvery step is really a process of developing judgment.\n\nNow scale that process from an individual to an entire civilization.\n\nThe more people capable of exercising judgment, the more proactive that civilization becomes.\n\nThe fewer people who exercise judgment, the weaker and more apathetic that civilization becomes.\n\nOur social media has already pushed us toward a reactive civilization, where gossip happens at a global scale but very little reflection happens.\n\nSo both futures are bad.\n\nA reactive civilization is a distracted, weak entity.\n\nAn apathetic civilization, where AI does all the thinking, is also a dead end.\n\nWhy not use AI to build a proactive civilization instead?\n\nHow do we get there?\n\nFirst of all, stop talking about \"removing the bottleneck.\"\n\nAI shouldn't remove humans from the loop.\n\nIt should move them up the loop.\n\nThe goal isn't to make humans unnecessary.\n\nIt's to make humans more capable in a much shorter period of time.\n\nPreviously it took two or three years for a junior developer to become a senior.\n\nNow we have AI on our side.\n\nSo ask a different question:\n\nHow can every single person operate one or two levels higher in the organization?\n\nTake that junior developer again.\n\nStrip away the routine work, the bug triage, the repetitive tasks, the endless context switching.\n\nThey don't just ship faster.\n\nThey spend their actual brainpower on architecture, trade-offs, and system design -- things they normally wouldn't encounter for years.\n\nThe AI doesn't simply hand them the answer.\n\nIt points out blind spots in their reasoning.\n\nIt simulates second-order consequences.\n\nIt forces them to defend their decisions.\n\nIn a year, they're making decisions that previously required a senior engineer.\n\nInstead of replacement, we must think accelerated human growth.\n\nThat's the workflow we should be obsessed with.\n\nThe task gets done.\n\nBut more importantly, the human gets upgraded every single day.\n\nSo what's the choice?\n\n**Option one:** Reactive civilization -- doomscrolling, global gossip, very little reflection.\n\n**Option two:** Apathetic civilization -- AI does everything while humans gradually stop exercising judgment.\n\n**Option three:** Proactive civilization -- AI exists to sharpen judgment, not replace it. We design workflows that produce better humans, not just faster outputs.\n\nIn ten years, we don't just have smarter machines.\n\nWe have a civilization that's better at making decisions.\n\nThat's the future worth building.\n\nStop talking about removing the bottleneck.\n\nStart talking about upgrading it.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/don-t-remove-the-bottlenecks-rather-upgrade-them", "canonical_source": "https://shrsv.hexmos.com/post/don%27t-remove-the-bottlenecks,-rather-upgrade-them", "published_at": "2026-07-17 16:04:24+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-07-17 16:21:20.575841+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-ethics", "ai-policy"], "entities": [], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/don-t-remove-the-bottlenecks-rather-upgrade-them", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/don-t-remove-the-bottlenecks-rather-upgrade-them.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/don-t-remove-the-bottlenecks-rather-upgrade-them.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/don-t-remove-the-bottlenecks-rather-upgrade-them.jsonld"}}
