This is not a research question, but more of a discussion point which I would very much like to hear our MO community's thoughts on. Recently, we've all seen the new Fields medalist (algebraic geometer) pivot to machine learning (a field he has no technical expertise in), claiming that maths is dead or changing dramatically.
Do people buy the hype, or is it just that: hype?
(Personally, I do not).
